1973 IAAF World Cross Country Championships – Senior Women's Race
The Senior women's race at the 1973 IAAF World Cross Country Championships was held in Waregem, Belgium, at the Hippodroom Waregem on March 17, 1973. A report on the event was given in the Glasgow Herald. Complete results, medallists, and the results of British athletes were published. World Athletics, formerly known as the International Amateur Athletic Federation (from 1912 to 2001) and International Association of Athletics Federations (from 2001 to 2019, both abbreviated as the IAAF) is the international governing body for the sport of athletics, covering track and field, cross country running, road running, race walking, mountain running, and ultra running. Nina Holmén
Siv Nina Anette Holmén (née Wärn; born 29 September 1951, in Esse) is a Finnish former long-distance runner. Nina Holmén won the first European Championship in women's 3000 meters running in 1974. She competed also in Olympics 1976 finishing 9th in 1500 meters running. Her best event, 3000 meters, was not in the Olympic schedule that time. Nina Holmén also competed successfully in cross-country running. She won silver medal in World Cross Country Championships in 1974. In 1973 she was 10th. In addition she won two medals in team race. Frances Anne "Francie" Larrieu Smith (November 23, 1952 in Palo Alto, California) is an American track and field athlete. She was the flagbearer at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona for the United States of America. Larrieu Smith was the third female American athlete to make five American Olympic teams, behind the six of fencer Jan York-Romary and Track and Field's Willye White. The feat was later equaled by basketball player Teresa Edwards, track and field's Gail Devers, cyclist/speedskater Chris Witty and swimmer Dara Torres. Doris Elaine Brown Heritage (born September 17, 1942) is a retired American runner. She won the International Cross Country Championships five times in a row, in 1967–1971. She collected silver medals in the 800 m at the Pan American Games, in 1967 and 1971. She placed fifth in the 800 at the 1968 Summer Olympics. Brown briefly held the world record in the 3000 m in 1971. After retiring from competitions she had a long career as a running coach, and helped prepare the national women's team to the 1984 Summer Olympics.
