1972–73 Colchester United F.C. Season
The 1972–73 season was Colchester United's 31st season in their history and their fifth successive season in the fourth tier of English football, the Fourth Division. Alongside competing in the Fourth Division, the club also participated in the FA Cup and the League Cup. Manager Dick Graham resigned early in the new season, following two and four defeats wins in the opening six games of the campaign. Jim Smith was appointed his successor in early October, but his first win didn't arrive until mid-November. Colchester endured a very poor season, and were required to seek re-election after finishing 22nd in the league table. Colchester suffered an early exit in the cup competitions as they were defeated in the first round of the League Cup by Gillingham, and the second round of the FA Cup by Bournemouth. Colchester ( ) is a city in Essex, in the East of England. It had a population of 122,000 in 2011. The demonym is Colcestrian. Colchester occupies the site of Camulodunum, the first major city in Roman Britain and its first capital. Colchester therefore claims to be Britain's first city. John McInally (footballer, Born 1951)
John Stewart McInally (26 September 1951 – 5 June 2012) was a Scottish footballer who played in the English Football League as a goalkeeper for Lincoln City and Colchester United. He began his career with Manchester United but failed to break into the first team. Career McInally, born in Gatehouse of Fleet, began his career with Manchester United, but failed to make a first-team appearance for the club. In 1970, he signed for Lincoln City, making his debut on 19 December in a 2–1 away defeat to Brentford in the Fourth Division. McInally made 22 Football League appearances for the Imps, making his final appearance on 29 April 1972 in a 4–0 win at home to Chester. In November 1972, McInally signed for Colchester United on loan from Lincoln, making one appearance in a 3–1 win against Southport on 10 November before being signed permanently, making his second and full-time debut on 25 November in a 1–0 win against Reading at Elm Park. Bobby Svarc
Robert Louis "Bobby" Svarc (born 8 February 1946) is an English former professional footballer who played as a forward. Career Svarc, born in Leicester, England, began his career at Leicester City, making 13 appearances, scoring two goals before moving to Lincoln City in 1968. He scored 16 goals in 45 appearances, and during this time scored 3 goals in 15 appearances on loan at Barrow. Svarc signed for non-league Boston United for £2,000 in 1971, and it seemed that his days as full professional were over. However, when his manager Jim Smith took over the reins at Colchester United, he insisted that he bring with him his star player for a transfer fee of £6,000. The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, the league is the oldest such competition in the world. Northern Premier League
The Northern Premier League is an English football league that was founded in 1968. It has four divisions: the Premier Division (which stands at level 7 of the English football league system), Division One East, Division One West and Division One Midlands (which stand at level 8). Geographically, the league covers all of Northern England and the northern/central areas of the Midlands, and western parts of East Anglia. Re-election (Football League)
The Re-election system of the Football League, in use until 1986, was a process by which the worst-placed clubs in the League had to reapply for their place, while non-League clubs could apply for a place. It was the only way for a non-League side to enter the Football League until direct promotion and relegation was introduced from the 1986–87 season onwards. The clubs placed on a re-election rank at the end of a season had to face their Football League peers at the Annual General Meeting of the League.
