1972 Virginia Slims Circuit
The 1972 ILTF Women's Tennis Circuit was 58th season since the founding of the International Lawn Tennis Association and was the final season to be solely administered by the ILTF. It was composed of the 2nd annual Virginia Slims Circuit with 20 events, a tour of tennis tournaments for female tennis players, sponsored by Virginia Slims cigarettes, but approved by the ILTF and the 2nd annual ILTF Commercial Union Assurance Grand Prix circuit with 11 events, and the 58th annual ILTF Circuit with 125 events. The following season would see the formation of the Women's Tennis Association in which the ILTF would eventually have to share responsibility for administering the world wide tour for women something at this time it was resisting to change. Evonne Goolagong
Evonne Fay Goolagong Cawley (née Goolagong; born 31 July 1951) is an Australian former world No. 1 tennis player. Goolagong was one of the world's leading players in the 1970s and early 1980s. At the age of 19, she won the French Open singles and the Australian Open doubles championships (the latter with Margaret Court). She won the women's singles tournament at Wimbledon in 1971. In 1980, she became the first mother to win Wimbledon for 66 years. Goolagong went on to win 14 Grand Slam tournament titles: seven in singles (four at the Australian Open, two at Wimbledon and one at the French Open), six in women's doubles, and one in mixed doubles. Virginia Wade
Sarah Virginia Wade (born 10 July 1945) is a British former professional tennis player. She won three Major tennis singles championships and four major doubles championships, and is the only British woman in history to have won titles at all four majors. She was ranked as high as No. 2 in the world in singles, and No. 1 in the world in doubles. Wade was the most recent British tennis player to win a major singles tournament until Andy Murray won the 2012 US Open, and was the most recent British woman to have won a major singles title until Emma Raducanu won the 2021 US Open. Janet Anne Young (born 22 October 1951) is a former professional tennis player from Australia. Biography Professional tennis Young competed on the WTA Tour in the 1970s and won a total of three doubles titles, all of which came partnering Evonne Goolagong. The pair were finalists in eight tournaments across the 1973 season and semi-finalists at the Australian Open, Wimbledon Championships and US Open. As a singles player, Young won the Queensland Open and South Australian Championships in 1973, both non-tour events. At the 1973 Wimbledon Championships, she won through to the fourth round, where she faced Chris Evert. She took Evert to a third set, which she lost 6–8, having led 4–0. Anne Coleman is an Australian former professional tennis player. Coleman, a Western Australian junior champion, was ranked amongst the top 10 juniors in the country. Karen Krantzcke
Karen Krantzcke (1 February 1946 – 11 April 1977) was an Australian tennis player. She achieved a world top ten singles ranking in 1970. In her short career, she made the quarterfinals or better at each of the four Grand Slam championships in both singles and doubles. She also won the Australian Open in doubles, and assisted Australia to victory in the Federation Cup. At the age of 31, Krantzcke died from a heart attack while jogging. Early career Krantzcke, a tall right-handed player, achieved much junior success including winning the Australian junior singles title in 1966. Gail Chanfreau (née Sherriff; born 3 April 1945), also known as Gail Lovera and Gail Benedetti, is a French former amateur and professional tennis player. Tennis career Chanfreau was born in Australia, but moved to France in 1968. Chanfreau made her first appearance in the Federation Cup for Australia in 1966. She played for France Fed Cup team from 1969 to 1980. Olga Vasilyevna Morozova ( rus, link=no, Ольга Васильевна Морозова, , ˈolʲɡə mɐˈrozəvə, a=Ru-Olga_Morozova.ogg; born 22 February 1949) is a retired tennis player who competed for the Soviet Union.
