1972 Taroom Explosion
The 1972 Taroom explosion occurred after a truck carrying ammonium nitrate, an explosive and fertilizer, caught fire on 30 August 1972 near Taroom, Central Queensland, Australia. The explosion, on the Fitzroy Developmental Road near cattle station, Stonecroft Station, 90 kilometres north-west of Taroom, killed three men. Summary 25-year-old truck driver Ronald Holzberger had left East Botany on 28 August 1972 with a 21 tonne (23 tons) load of Nitropril, Imperial Chemical Industries#Australia, Imperial Chemical Industries' brand of a pourous type of ammonium nitrate. Used extensively as an explosive in open-pit mining, open-cut mining, the load was destined for the Goonyella Riverside Mine, Goonyella coalfields. Taroom
Taroom is a town in the Shire of Banana and locality split between the Shire of Banana and the Western Downs Region in Queensland, Australia. At the , Taroom had a population of 869 people. Geography The town is located on the Dawson River and the Leichhardt Highway, north west of the state capital, Brisbane, from Rockhampton and from Toowoomba. History Prussian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt passed through the district in 1844, carving his initials and date on a coolibah tree that now stands in the centre of town. Leichhardt's carving is no longer visible following an alleged attempt to remove bark growing over the initials that removed the initials as well. Reporting the rich soils in the area, settlers began taking up land in 1845 and by 1850 a town had been established at a popular camping spot near the Dawson River. 2020 Beirut Explosion
On 4 August 2020, a large amount of ammonium nitrate stored at the Port of Beirut in the capital city of Lebanon exploded, causing at least 218 deaths, 7,000 injuries, and US$15 billion in property damage, as well as leaving an estimated 300,000 people homeless. A cargo of 2,750 tonnes of the substance (equivalent to around 1.1 kilotons of TNT) had been stored in a warehouse without proper safety measures for the previous six years after having been confiscated by the Lebanese authorities from the abandoned ship . Wyandra is a town and a locality in the Shire of Paroo, Queensland, Australia. In the , Wyandra had a population of 99 people.
