1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Season
The 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates season was the 91st season of the Pittsburgh Pirates franchise; the 86th in the National League. The defending World Series champion Pirates finished first in the National League East with an MLB-best record of 96–59. The team was defeated three games to two by the Cincinnati Reds in the 1972 National League Championship Series. Despite losing the series, the Pirates put up a good fight, unlike the last time the two teams met in the playoffs. In Game 5, the Pirates led 3-2 in the 9th inning, and were 3 outs away from pulling off a major upset over the Reds. National League East
The National League East is one of Major League Baseball's six divisions. Along with the American League Central it is one of two divisions to have every member win at least one World Series title. The division was created when the National League (along with the American League) added two expansion teams and divided into two divisions, East and West effective for the 1969 season. The National League's geographical alignment was rather peculiar as its partitioning was really more north and south instead of east and west. Two teams in the Eastern Time Zone, the Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds, were in the same division as teams on the Pacific coast. The 1971 World Series was the championship round of Major League Baseball's (MLB) 1971 season and featured the first night game in its history. The 1972 Philadelphia Phillies season saw the team finish with a record of 59–97, last place in the National League East. Offseason The Phils made perhaps one of the most significant trades in their history on February 25, when they traded Rick Wise to the St. Louis Cardinals for Steve Carlton. Larry Demery
Lawrence Calvin Demery (born June 4, 1953) is an American former Major League Baseball pitcher. He played all or part of four seasons in the majors, from until , for the Pittsburgh Pirates. A native of Bakersfield, California, Demery was the son of fellow major leaguer Art Demery. He played baseball at Wasco High School and later at Locke High School in Los Angeles, where he threw two no-hitters. Demery played college baseball at Nebraska and was drafted by the Pirates in 1972. He began his professional career that year with the Gastonia Pirates and walked more batters than any other pitcher in the Western Carolinas League. He spent most of the following season in the Carolina League, which he led with fourteen complete games. Demery made his Major League debut on June 2, 1974, against the Cincinnati Reds.
