1971 Men's World Cup (field Hockey)
The 1971 Men's Hockey World Cup was the inaugural edition of the Hockey World Cup. It took place from 15 to 24 October in Barcelona, Spain. Pakistan were the inaugural World Cup winners, beating Spain in the final, 1–0. Participants The first World Cup was the only one without qualification. It was an invitational tournament where the top ten teams from five continents were invited by the International Hockey Federation by merit of their performances in the Summer Olympics. The teams were divided into two groups for five each, with the top two proceeding to the semi-finals after the round-robin stage. Gold medalists at the 1968 Olympics, Pakistan, were grouped in 'B' alongside runners-up Australia, and Spain, the Netherlands and Japan. Rajwinder Singh
Rajwinder Singh, full name Rajvinder Singh Rai from Khusropur, Julhander, Punjab, India, was one of the top Indian field hockey internationals during his peak. He scored a solo goal for India against Pakistan during the semi-final of the 1971 Men's Hockey World Cup in Barcelona. Prior to playing in the World Cup, Rajvinder, who graduated from Ludhiana Agricultural University, represented the all-India university hockey team for three years, touring the country and internationally. It was while he was a university student that he represented India, and received a roll of honour from his university, making him the first student to receive such an honour. Abdul Rashid, known as Rashid Junior, (3 March 1947 – 4 November 2020) was a Pakistani field hockey player. Ravinder Pal Singh (6 September 1960 – 8 May 2021) was an Indian field hockey player and former banker. He was well known as a prominent centre-half during his playing days from 1979 to 1984. He was part of the Indian hockey team that won the gold medal in 1980 Summer Olympics at Moscow where India defeated Spain 4-3 in the final.
