1971 East Pakistan Intellectuals Massacre
In 1971, the Pakistan Army and their local collaborators, most notably the extreme right wing militia group Al-Badr (East Pakistan), Al-Badr, engaged in the Genocide, systematic execution of Bengali people, Bengali intellectuals during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. Bengali intellectuals were abducted, tortured and killed during the entire duration of the war as part of the 1971 Bangladesh genocide. However, the largest number of systematic executions took place on 25 March and 14 December 1971, two dates that bookend the conflict. 14 December is commemorated in Bangladesh as Martyred Intellectuals Day. 1971 Bangladesh Genocide
The genocide in Bangladesh began on 25 March 1971 with the launch of Operation Searchlight, as the government of Pakistan, dominated by West Pakistan, began a military crackdown on East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) to suppress Bengali people, Bengali calls for self-determination. During the nine-month-long Bangladesh Liberation War, members of the Pakistan Armed Forces and supporting pro-Pakistani Islamist militias from Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, Jamaat-e-Islami killed between 300,000 and 3,000,000 people and raped between 200,000 and 400,000 Bengali women, in a systematic campaign of genocidal rape. Martyred Intellectuals Day ( bn, শহীদ বুদ্ধিজীবী দিবস, Shaheed Buddhijibi Dibôsh) is observed on 14 December in Bangladesh to commemorate those intellectuals who were killed by Pakistani forces and their collaborators during the Bangladesh Liberation War, particularly on 25 March and 14 December 1971. Ataur Rahman Khan Khadim
Atta ur Rehman Khan was an academic in the Bangladesh Liberation war and is considered a martyr in Bangladesh. Early life Khadim was born in Kharampur, Akhaura, Brahmanbaria District on 1933. He graduated from George H. E. School in 1948 and Dhaka College in 1950. He completed his master's degree in physics from Dhaka University in 1954. Career After graduation Khadim joined Philips Electric Company as an electrical engineer in 1955. From 1959 to 1960 he studied theoretical physics at the physics institute of University of Göttingen at Göttingen, West Germany. After completion he joined Dhaka University as a lecturer, where he specialized in experimental physics and electronics. AFM Alim Chowdhury
Abul Fayez Mohammad Abdul Alim Chowdhury (1928–1971) was an eye specialist in Bangladesh. He was abducted by the Al-Badr militia as part of a plan to kill the renowned intellectuals of the country and was found dead on December 18, 1971, at Rayer Bazaar in Dhaka. Early life and career Chowdhury was born in the village Khoyerpur in Kishoreganj in 1928. He passed metric examination from Kishoreganj High School in 1945. Then he went to Calcutta Islamia College, where he passed the Intermediate examination in 1947. He studied in Dhaka Medical College and received an MBBS degree from there in 1955. In 1961, he received a D.O. degree from London. Chowdhury worked at St James's Hospital as a registrar from 1961 to 1963. He returned to Bangladesh in 1963 and joined Kumudini Hospital in Mirzapur as a chief ophthalmologist. ABM Nurul Alam
ABM Nurul Alam or ''Abu Barek Mohammad Nurul Alam'' was a Bangladesh physician who was killed in the Bangladesh Liberation war. He is considered a martyr in Bangladesh. Early life Alam was born in Dhantala, Bochaganj, Dinajpur, East Bengal, British India in 1929. He was involved in the Bengali language movement. He graduated from Dhaka Medical College in 1961 after completing his MBBS. Career Alam joined the Santahar Railway Hospital as an assistant surgeon. Abul Fazal Ziaur Rahman
Abul Fazal Ziaur Rahman was a physician and army officer who was killed in the Bangladesh Liberation war. He is considered a martyr in Bangladesh. Early life Rahman was born in Noagon, Araihazar, Narayanganj on February 2, 1926. He graduated from Kathghar High School in Sandwip in 1944 and from Chittagong College in 1946. He Graduated from Dhaka Medical College after completing his MBBS degree. Career Rahman joined the Pakistan Army Medical Corps in 1949. He served at the Combined Military Hospitals in Rangpur and Dhaka. In 1963, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. In 1968, he was made the superintendent and principal of Sylhet Medical College, and also served as the dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 1969 to 1970. Altaf Gauhar
Altaf Gauhar (17 March 1923 – 14 November 2000) was a civil servant, journalist, poet, and writer from Pakistan, close to the country’s first military dictator Ayub Khan to the point his detractors called him Khan’s Svengali and Goebbels. Early life He was born in Gujranwala on 17 March 1923 into a Rajput-Janjua family and did his post graduation in English literature from the Government College University, Lahore. Civil service career Gauhar entered the Civil Service of Pakistan in 1948. Starting his career as Secretary, State Bank of Pakistan, he rose to be Information Secretary Government of Pakistan at the age of 39. During his tenure, draconian laws governing the press were passed, something for which Gauhar later publicly apologised. He was a gifted writer and became very close to President Ayub Khan, so much so that he was known as the de facto vice president of Pakistan. Munier Choudhury
Munier Choudhury (27 November 192514 December 1971) was a Bangladeshi educationist, playwright, literary critic and political dissident. He was a victim of the 1971 killing of Bengali intellectuals, mass killing of Bangladeshi intellectuals in 1971. He was awarded Independence Day Award in 1980, by the then president Ziaur Rahman's government, posthumously. Early life and education Choudhury's ancestors were originated from Noakhali. Shahidullah Kaiser
Shahidullah Kaiser (16 February 1927 – disappeared 14 December 1971) was a Bangladeshi novelist and writer. He was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1969, Ekushey Padak in 1983 and Independence Day Award in 1998.
