1970 Maryland Gubernatorial Election
The 1970 Maryland gubernatorial election was held on November 3, 1970. Incumbent Democrat Marvin Mandel defeated Republican nominee Charles Stanley Blair with 65.73% of the vote. This election was the first of eight consecutive Democratic gubernatorial victories in Maryland, a streak not broken until the election of Republican Bob Ehrlich in 2002. Marvin Mandel (April 19, 1920 – August 30, 2015) was an American politician and lawyer who served as the 56th Governor of Maryland from January 7, 1969, to January 17, 1979, including a one-and-a-half-year period when Lt. Governor Blair Lee III served as the state's acting Governor in Mandel's place from June 1977 to January 15, 1979. He was a member of the Democratic Party, as well as Maryland's first, and to date, only Jewish governor. Before he became the state's Governor, Mandel had been Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1964 to 1969 and a delegate since 1952. Charles Stanley Blair (December 20, 1927 – April 20, 1980) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. Early life Born in Kingsville, Maryland, Blair was in the United States Maritime Service from 1945 to 1947, and then received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1951 and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1953. Robert Leroy Ehrlich Jr. (born November 25, 1957) is an American lawyer and politician who served as the 60th Governor of Maryland from 2003 to 2007. A Republican, Ehrlich represented Maryland's 2nd Congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003. Before that, he was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates. In 2006, Ehrlich was defeated in his bid for re-election by Democrat Martin O'Malley. In 2010, Ehrlich sought an unsuccessful rematch against O'Malley. 2002 Maryland Gubernatorial Election
The 2002 Maryland gubernatorial election was held on November 5, 2002. Democratic Governor Parris Glendening was term-limited and could not seek a third term. Republican Bob Ehrlich defeated Democrat Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, making him the first Republican governor of Maryland since Spiro Agnew in 1966. Maryland Gubernatorial Elections
Maryland gubernatorial elections have been held since statehood in 1867 to directly elect the Governor of Maryland and the officers that work with the winner candidate. After the initial election was held in November 5 1867, when Oden Bowie became the first Governor of Maryland, each subsequent election was held every four years in November.
