1970 Ireland Rugby Union Tour Of Argentina
The 1970 Ireland rugby union tour of Argentina was a series of matches played between August and September in Argentina by the Ireland national rugby union team. Despite that the matches were not officially recognised by the Irish Rugby Football Union as Test matches, it was a real tour of Irish national team. At that time, the IRFU considered as official only matches against the other Home Unions, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. It was the third tour of a "Home Union" in Argentina in three years, after Wales (1968) and Scotland (1969), and it was the second tour of an Irish side after the tour of 1952. The Argentine Rugby Union ( es, Unión Argentina de Rugby, abbreviated "UAR") is the governing body for rugby union in Argentina. It is a member of World Rugby, with a seat on that body's Executive Council, and a founding member of Sudamérica Rugby. The UAR organises all the national teams, including Senior (''Pumas''), U-20 (''Pumitas''), Argentina XV, Sevens and Women's squads and the franchise Jaguares that participates in SANZAAR's Super Rugby competition. History Origins The first rugby match in Argentina was played in 1873, in the Buenos Aires Cricket Club Ground sited in Palermo, Buenos Aires. Manchester Rugby Club, founded in 1860 as Manchester Football Club, is one of the oldest rugby union clubs in the world. Home matches are played at Grove Park in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport. The club has a Senior Men's section (1st XV, 2nd XV and 3rd XV), a Senior Women and Youth Girls section (Manchester Women & Girls' Academy), and also Minis, Juniors and Colts (Manchester Academy). Dolphin Rugby Football Club is a rugby union club in Cork. It was founded in 1902, by members of Dolphin Swimming Club seeking to find a wintertime activity. They play in Division 2A of the All-Ireland League. Former Irish Coach, Declan Kidney played for the club in the 1980s and early 1990s. Highfield RFC
Highfield Rugby Football Club is a rugby union club based in Cork, Ireland, playing in Division 1B of the All-Ireland League. The club was founded in 1930 and was elevated to senior status in the province of Munster in 1953. Before moving to its present grounds at Woodleigh Park, the club was based in fields off Magazine Road between Highfield Avenue and Highfield West, where the team derived its name. Syd Millar
John Sydney Millar (born 23 May 1934) is a former rugby union prop from Northern Ireland who played international rugby for Ireland and the British Lions. After retiring from playing rugby he became a rugby coach and later a rugby administrator. He became chairman of the Irish Rugby Union in 1995, and from 2003 until 2007 was the chairman of the International Rugby Board. Old Belvedere R.F.C. is a senior Irish rugby union club based on Anglesea Road in Ballsbridge, Dublin, Ireland. Old Belvedere was originally founded in 1918–19 by former pupils of Belvedere College. Old Belvedere enters senior men's teams in the All-Ireland League, the Leinster Senior League and the Leinster Senior Cup. In 2010–11 they were All-Ireland League champions. Willie John McBride
William James McBride, CBE, better known as Willie John McBride (born 6 June 1940) is a former rugby union footballer who played as a Lock (rugby union), lock for Ireland national rugby union team, Ireland and the British and Irish Lions. He played 63 Test match (rugby union), Tests for Ireland including eleven as captain, and toured with the Lions five times; a record that gave him 17 Lions Test caps. John Francis "Sean" Lynch (born 22 September 1942) is a former Ireland national rugby union team, Ireland international rugby union player He played for and captained Leinster. Instonians
Instonians is a sports club based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, that incorporates rugby union, men's and ladies' hockey and cricket sections. There is also a golf society that plays under the Instonians name. Instonians Rugby Football, Cricket and Athletic Clubs merged on 1 April 1962, the combined sections being known as 'Instonians', and then on 31 May 1979 the title of the club was changed to Instonians Rugby Football and Cricket Club. Finally on 1 April 1988, the Instonians Men's Hockey Club joined the association when the title reverted to Instonians. Ronnie Lamont
Ronald Arthur Lamont, MBE (18 November 1941 – 22 December 2022) was an international rugby union player. Lamont was born on 18 November 1941. Lamont was capped thirteen times for Ireland between 1965 and 1970, winning seven caps as a number eight and six as a flanker. He scored one try for Ireland. He was selected for the 1966 British Lions tour to Australia and New Zealand and played in all four internationals against New Zealand, scoring one try. He was selected by the 1967 New Zealand Rugby Almanac as one of its players of the season. Lamont also played club rugby for Instonians. During his career, he received a lot of jerseys, most of which are framed in Ballyclare RFC. Mick Hipwell
Michael Louis "Mick" Hipwell (born 15 July 1940) is a former Ireland national rugby union team, Ireland international rugby union player. He toured 1971 British Lions tour to New Zealand and Australia, New Zealand in 1971 with the British and Irish Lions, British Lions and at the time played club rugby for Terenure College RFC.
