1968 Peach Bowl
The 1968 Peach Bowl was a college football bowl game between the LSU Tigers and the Florida State Seminoles. It was the first Peach Bowl game ever played. Background The game was originally created as a fund-raiser by the Lions Clubs of Georgia in 1968. The game was played in historic Grant Field for the first three games before being moved in 1971. The Tigers were ranked for nine out of the eleven games of the regular season before falling out late, reaching as high as #8 while finishing tied for 3rd in the Southeastern Conference. The Seminoles were ranked only two times the whole season, but had risen back in the polls before this game, as they tried to win a bowl game for the first time since 1965. Peach Bowl
The Peach Bowl is an annual college football bowl game played in Atlanta, Georgia since December 1968. Since 1997, it has been sponsored by Chick-fil-A and is officially known as the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. From 2006 to 2013, it was officially referred to as simply the Chick-fil-A Bowl. The winner of the bowl game is awarded the ''George P. Crumbley Trophy'', named after the game's founder George Crumbley. The College Football Playoff (CFP) is an annual postseason knockout invitational tournament to determine a national champion for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest level of college football competition in the United States. Charles McClendon
Charles Youmans McClendon (October 17, 1923 – December 6, 2001), also known as "Cholly Mac", was an American football player and coach. He served at the head coach at Louisiana State University from 1962 to 1979. McClendon was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1986. Early years McClendon was born on October 17, 1923 in Lewisville, Arkansas. He played college football under Bear Bryant at the University of Kentucky. Coaching career McClendon's first coaching job was as an assistant at Vanderbilt University in 1952. In 1953, he came to LSU as an assistant under head coach Gaynell Tinsley. He was retained as an assistant when Paul Dietzel took over the team in 1955. In 1958, McClendon helped Dietzel coach LSU to its first recognized national championship. At the end of the 1961 season, Dietzel left for Army and picked McClendon to be his successor.
