1966 Wimbledon Championships – Women's Singles
Billie Jean King defeated Maria Bueno in the final, 6–3, 3–6, 6–1 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 1966 Wimbledon Championships. Margaret Smith was the defending champion, but lost in the semifinals to King. The second round match in which Gail Sherriff beat her sister Carol was the second match between sisters in the ladies' singles draw at Wimbledon, the first being in the 1884 Wimbledon Championships when Maud Watson beat Lillian. The next Wimbledon match between sisters in the singles draw was in 2000 between Serena and Venus Williams. Billie Jean King
Billie Jean King (née Moffitt; born November 22, 1943) is an American former world No. 1 tennis player. King won 39 major titles: 12 in singles, 16 in women's doubles, and 11 in mixed doubles. King was a member of the victorious United States team in seven Federation Cups and nine Wightman Cups. For three years, she was the U.S. captain in the Federation Cup. King is an advocate of gender equality and has long been a pioneer for equality and social justice. In 1973, at age 29, she won the " Battle of the Sexes" tennis match against the 55-year-old Bobby Riggs. King was also the founder of the Women's Tennis Association and the Women's Sports Foundation. Liz Starkie
Elizabeth Starkie (born 31 August 1938) is a British former tennis player. She became Elizabeth Wagstaff after marriage. Active during the 1960s, Starkie represented Great Britain in both Federation Cup and Wightman Cup tennis. Starkie, a native of Yorkshire, competed in the Wightman Cup from 1962 to 1966 and was the doubles partner of Ann Jones in Britain's run to the semi-finals of the 1966 Federation Cup. Winnie Shaw
Winifred Mason Shaw (later Mrs. Wooldridge) (18 January 1947 – 30 March 1992) was a professional tennis player from Scotland whose career ran from the mid-1960s until the early 70s. In 2002, she posthumously was inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame. Esmé Emmanuel Berg (born 14 June 1947) is a former professional tennis player from South Africa. Emmanuel was the girls' singles champion at the 1965 French Championships. She won a doubles gold medal at the 1965 Maccabiah Games in Israel. Her best performance at Wimbledon came in 1972 when she was a doubles quarterfinalist, partnering Ceci Martinez. Lidy Venneboer
Lidy Jansen Venneboer (born 17 August 1946), better known as Lidy Venneboer, is a Dutch former amateur tennis player. Jansen Venneboer is her maiden name, which became Kirsch-Jansen Venneboer after marriage. Venneboer, a native of Doetinchem, was the Dutch junior champion at age 17 and featured in several grand slam main draws while on tour in the late 1960s. She was a doubles semi-finalist with Betty Stöve at the 1967 Australian Championships. In 1968 she featured in the final of the Federation Cup with the Netherlands. The Dutch, appearing in their first ever final, came up against Australia and lost both singles rubbers to surrender the tie. Francesca Gordigiani
Francesca Gordigiani (born 20 December 1940) is an Italian former tennis player. Known by her nickname "Cecca", Gordigiani is a native of Florence and the great-granddaughter of famous Italian portrait painter Michele Gordigiani. Her grandfather, Edoardo Gordigiani, was also an impressionist of note. Gordigiani, the girls' singles champion at Roland Garros in 1958, was one of Italy's top players during the 1960s. She won the Italian Tennis Championships in 1964 and reached the third round at Wimbledon on three occasions. Between 1964 and 1968 she represented Italy in the Federation Cup, competing in three singles and four doubles rubbers. Edda Buding (13 November 1936 – 15 July 2014) was a German tennis player of Romanian birth. She received the doubles gold medal at the 1968 Summer Olympics doubles demonstration event partnered with Helga Niessen Masthoff. Along with Yola Ramírez Ochoa, she was the runner-up in the 1961 U.S. Championships women's doubles event and with Robert Howe was the runner-up in mixed doubles at Wimbledon in 1961.
