League Of Ireland
The League of Ireland ( ga, Sraith na hÉireann), together with the Football Association of Ireland, is one of the two main governing bodies responsible for organising association football in the Republic of Ireland. The term was originally used to refer to a single division league. However today the League of Ireland features five divisions – the Premier Division, the First Division, U19 Division, U17 Division, U15 Division and starting U13 Division. The League of Ireland has always worked closely with the FAI and in 2006 the two bodies formally merged. All the divisions are currently sponsored by Airtricity and as a result the league is also known as the SSE Airtricity League. Ben O'Sullivan
Ben O'Sullivan was an Irish soccer player during the 1960s and 1970s. He played for Bohemians (two spells), Derry City and St. Patrick's Athletic during his career in the League of Ireland and made 1 appearance for Bohs in European competition. O'Sullivan was an ace goalscorer whose best season for Bohs came in 1966/67 when he netted 22 times in all competitions (9 league goals). Eric Barber
Eric Barber (January 18, 1942 – August 20, 2014) was an Irish professional footballer. He spent most of his career playing for Shelbourne in the League of Ireland with whom he had three spells from 1958 to 1966, 1971–75 and 1978–80, managing them during the 1979–80 season. Player Professional During his time with Shels, Barber scored a club record 126 league goals. He was part of Shels FAI Youth Cup-winning side in 1959 and went on to win the League of Ireland championship in 1962, and the FAI Cup in 1960 and 1963, beating Cork Hibernians 2–0 on both occasions. Barber scored in every round including the final in the 1960 cup win and in the 1962 cup final defeat to Shamrock Rovers. His goal in the 1960 final was a lob from almost forty yards. In March 1966, Barber signed for Birmingham City, but never became a regular. Billy Dixon (footballer, Born 1941)
Billy Dixon (born 12 February 1941) is an Irish former association footballer who played as a forward. He began his career at Home Farm F.C. and after playing for Waterford United F.C. he signed for Drumcondra F.C. where he made his debut in a 5-5 draw with Shamrock Rovers in 1963. He scored in Inter-Cities Fairs Cup wins over Danish side B 1909 of Odense (twice) and Bayern Munich. He joined Shamrock Rovers F.C. in June 1966 and scored on his debut. He earned one League of Ireland XI while at Milltown and 12 in total and scored 4 goals in 10 appearances in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Dixon scored the winner in his only FAI Cup final in 1967. He scored twice while playing for Rovers when they represented Boston as Boston Rovers in the summer of 1967 United Soccer Association. Frank O'Neill (footballer)
Frank O'Neill (born 13 April 1940) is an Irish former footballer who spent most of his career at Shamrock Rovers. As an international he also played for the Republic of Ireland. Playing career Early years O'Neill joined Stella Maris at the age of twelve before moving onto Home Farm. He also played for an FAI Youth Selection against a Liverpool County FA XI at Goodison Park, and in 1958 he played against the youth teams of some of the leading European clubs in a tournament in Germany. Arsenal O'Neill signed for Arsenal as an eighteen-year-old, initially as an amateur but subsequently turned professional in April 1959. He spent the next two seasons playing for Arsenal Reserves, making just 2 appearances in the English League. On both occasions, during the 1960–61 season, he deputised for the injured Danny Clapton. Liam Tuohy (footballer)
Liam Tuohy (27 April 1933 – 13 August 2016) was an Irish footballer and manager. During the 1950s and 1960s, Tuohy played as an outside left for Shamrock Rovers, Newcastle United, and the Republic of Ireland. In 1959, while playing for Ireland, Tuohy scored the first ever goal in the history of the European Championship. After retiring as a player, Tuohy became a coach and managed several clubs in the League of Ireland including Shamrock Rovers, Dundalk, and Shelbourne. He also managed the Republic of Ireland. In July 1973, he also took charge of the Shamrock Rovers XI that played Brazil in a prestige friendly, and during the 1980s, he successfully coached the Republic of Ireland U-19s. He subsequently served as a director of football at Home Farm, before retiring in 2002. In October 2007, Tuohy, along with other members of the Shamrock Rovers team that won the FAI Cup six times in a row during the 1960s, was honoured by the FAI. Bobby Gilbert
Bobby Gilbert is an Irish former footballer who played for, among others, Derry City and Shamrock Rovers. Gilbert scored in European competitions for both City and Rovers. As an international he also played for the Republic of Ireland. Derry City Together with Jimmy McGeough, Jim Crossan and Matt Doherty, Gilbert was a member of the Derry City team that overcame F.C. Lyn Oslo in a European Cup tie in 1965. As a result, City became the first Irish League team to win a European Cup tie over two legs. In the first leg, played away on 31 August, Gilbert headed in two goals in a 5–3 defeat. However, he missed the return leg on 9 September because of injury, but Gilbert's two goals helped City to an 8–6 aggregate win.
