Cliff Wright (footballer)
George Clifford "Cliff" Wright (born 18 October 1944) is an English former footballer who played as a midfielder in the Football League for Hartlepools United and Darlington. He began his career as an apprentice with Middlesbrough, but never played for them in the league, and after leaving Darlington spent four-and-a-half seasons with Northern Premier League club Boston United. Barry Ashworth (born 18 August 1942) is an English former footballer. Playing career Ashworth was playing Non-League football for Bangor City before he joined Southend United in 1963. William Marshall (11 July 1936 – 20 April 2007) was a Northern Irish professional footballer who played as a full back. He played in the Football League for Burnley, Oldham Athletic and Hartlepools United during the 1965-66 season. Brian Drysdale
Brian Drysdale (born 24 February 1943) is an English former professional footballer who played as a left back. He made over 500 appearances in the Football League in the 1960s and 70s. Career Brian Drysdale played junior football for Lincoln City. Drysdale made his League debut for Lincoln City before signing as a professional. Drysdale joined Hartlepool United on a free transfer in July 1965. Drysdale played under the Brian Clough and Peter Taylor management partnership during the seasons 1965-66 and 1966-67, also starred in the 1967-68 promotion from the Fourth Division when Hartlepool United finished in 3rd place. Hartlepool were relegated the following season finishing in 22nd place in the Third Division. Alan Dicks signed Drysdale in May 1969 for £10,000 from Hartlepool United for Bristol City. Kenny Simpkins
Kenny Simpkins (21 December 1943 – 16 February 2023) was a Welsh goalkeeper who played professionally in the 1960s. Playing career After five unproductive years at Wrexham he joined Hartlepool during which time he played for the Welsh Under 23 side. On 18 November 1967, due to numerous injuries in the Hartlepool team, Simpkins started a game for the club as a striker and scored in a 3–2 win against Port Vale. He made a total of 134 appearances in all competitions for Pools, during his time with club he was managed by Brian Clough during seasons 1965-66 and 1966-67 and was also a part of the first ever Hartlepool side to win promotion. In 1968, Simpkins signed for Boston United as the club's back-up goalkeeper. Like at Hartlepool, Simpkins was forced to play one game as a striker due to an injury crisis. John McGovern (footballer)
John Prescott McGovern (born 28 October 1949) is a Scottish former association football midfielder and manager. McGovern is most famous for captaining the Nottingham Forest side that won the European Cup twice under the management of Brian Clough, whom he played under at four clubs, and Peter Taylor. At the age of 19 he became the youngest player to play in all four divisions of the Football League. During his playing career he won promotion with Hartlepools United / Hartlepool, Derby County and Nottingham Forest. He won titles as English League champions with both Derby and Forest. Tony Parry
Anthony John Parry (8 September 1945 – 23 November 2009) was an English footballer who made nearly 200 appearances in the Football League playing as a central defender for Hartlepool United, Derby County and Mansfield Town. Parry was born in Burton upon Trent. He was Brian Clough's first signing as manager of Hartlepool. He was a mainstay of the side which won promotion from the Fourth Division in the 1967–68 season, and won the club's inaugural Player of the Year award. In 1972 the club was on the brink of going out of business, needing to sell a player to survive, when Clough, by then manager of Derby County, bid £2,500 for the player. Brian Wade Grant (born March 5, 1972) is an American former professional basketball player. He played the power forward and center positions for five teams during 12 seasons in the National Basketball Association. He was known for his tenacious rebounding and blue-collar defense.
