1965 BC Lions Season
The 1965 CFL season, 1965 BC Lions finished in fourth place in the Western Conference with a 6–9–1 record and failed to defend their Grey Cup title as the team ended the season on a five-game losing streak and missed the playoffs. On October 24, the Lions set the record for the highest single game regular season attendance at Empire Stadium of 37,788 (this was the CFL record that stood for over a decade until 1976). While Joe Kapp led the league in passing for the second consecutive season with 2961 yards passing and 219 completions, the other stars on the team were getting older, including star tailback Willie Fleming who had only had 595 yards rushing. Defensive end Dick Fouts was the lone Lion to make the CFL All-star team. Canadian Football League West Division
The West Division is one of the two regional divisions of the Canadian Football League (CFL), its counterpart being the East Division (CFL), East Division. Although the CFL was not founded until 1958, the West Division and its clubs are descended from earlier leagues. The five teams in the West Division are the BC Lions, Calgary Stampeders, Edmonton Elks, Saskatchewan Roughriders, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Dick Fouts
Richard Lee Fouts (August 7, 1933 – August 5, 2003) was an American professional Canadian football player with the Canadian Football League's Toronto Argonauts and the BC Lions. After playing college football at the University of Missouri, where he was an All-American, Fouts spent his entire 13-year CFL career as a defensive lineman. Peter Kempf
Peter Kempf (born September 15, 1939) is a former award-winning and Grey Cup champion kicker and tight end who played in the Canadian Football League from 1963 to 1968. Kempf joined the BC Lions in 1963 and, with 109 points and 22 field goals (second in the league and then team records,) was winner of the Dr. Beattie Martin Trophy for Canadian rookie of the year in the west. In 1964 he again was second in the league with 81 points, adding 4 converts in the Leos' Grey Cup victory. Again second in scoring in 1965 with 82 points, after 48 games with the Lions he left for the Montreal Alouettes in 1966, where he played 14 games and scored 67 points. Mack Burton
Nathaniel "Mack" Burton (born c. 1939 – May 16, 2017) was a Canadian football player who played for the BC Lions. He won the Grey Cup with them in 1964. Pat Claridge
Patrick S. Claridge (July 12, 1938 – March 8, 2012) was a Canadian football player who played for the BC Lions and Calgary Stampeders. College career Claridge lettered at Washington from 1958-60. He was leading receiver and Most Improved Player on the 1960 team, which went 10-1 while beat Minnesota in the Rose Bowl 17-7 and was awarded the national championship by the Helms Athletic Foundation. Robert Virgil Swift (March 6, 1915 – October 17, 1966) was an American professional baseball player, coach, manager and scout. Willie Fleming
Willie Fleming (born February 2, 1939) is a former professional Canadian football player with the Canadian Football League's BC Lions. Fleming played collegiately as a halfback at the University of Iowa, where he was a member of the Hawkeyes' 1959 Rose Bowl championship team. He is a member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, the BC Sports Hall of Fame, and the BC Lions Wall of Fame. Fleming's number 15 jersey is one of eight numbers retired by the Lions. In 2003, Fleming was voted a member of the BC Lions All-Time Dream Team as part of the club's 50th anniversary celebration. In 2006, Fleming was voted to the Honour Roll of the CFL's Top 50 players of the league's modern era by Canadian sports network TSN.
