League Of Ireland
The League of Ireland ( ga, Sraith na hÉireann), together with the Football Association of Ireland, is one of the two main governing bodies responsible for organising association football in the Republic of Ireland. The term was originally used to refer to a single division league. However today the League of Ireland features five divisions – the Premier Division, the First Division, U19 Division, U17 Division, U15 Division and starting U13 Division. The League of Ireland has always worked closely with the FAI and in 2006 the two bodies formally merged. All the divisions are currently sponsored by Airtricity and as a result the league is also known as the SSE Airtricity League. Turlough O'Connor (born 22 July 1946 in Athlone) was an Irish association footballer during the 1960s and 1970s. He is a member of the Bohemians Hall of Fame. His two brothers Padraig O'Connor and Michael O'Connor also played for Athlone Town. Playing career He has spells as player at Limerick F.C., where he made a scoring debut in a League of Ireland Shield game at Sligo on 25 August 1963, Bohemians, Fulham, Bohemians again, Dundalk and Athlone Town. John McCole
John McCole (18 September 1936 – 1982) was a Scottish professional footballer who played in Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales and the United States. Career Born in Glasgow, Scotland, McCole began his career with Vale of Leven before signing a professional contract with Falkirk in 1956. McCole moved to England in 1958 to play with Bradford City, Leeds United (where he scored 45 goals in 78 league appearances, but was unable to prevent Leeds from being relegated from the First Division; McCole also set a club record by scoring four goals in the League Cup match against Brentford before returning to Bradford in October 1961) and Rotherham United, before spending a year in Ireland with Shelbourne. Peter Mitchell is a Northern Irish former professional footballer who played as a full back for Leeds Utd. He is also a former Ireland international wheelchair basketball player, actor and motivational speaker. Career Leeds United Born and raised in Limavady, Northern Ireland, Mitchell came to England as a 16 year old to play for Leeds United who were, at the time, managed by David O'Leary and had a reputation for bringing through Irish players. Jack Fitzgerald (footballer)
Jack Fitzgerald (3 April 1930 – 23 November 2003) was an Irish professional footballer. Fitzgerald was the Golden Boy of Waterford football during the Fifties. Jack was one of six brothers who played in the League of Ireland for the Blues - Denny, Tom, Ned, Peter Fitzgerald (footballer) and Paul were the others. Their father, Michael, was a native of Durrow and a hurler, only becoming involved with football through his sons. However, he subsequently was elected chairman of Waterford and became an international selector in the early 1960s. Fitzgerald had started his career as a right half at Waterford Bohemians and along with his brother Denny was in the squad that won the FAI Youth Cup in 1947. Austin Noonan
Austin Noonan (16 July 1933 – 7 November 2022) was an Irish football player and manager who played for Cork Celtic and Cork Hibernians in the League of Ireland. He also served as manager of Cork Hibernians. Career Noonan first played football as a schoolboy with Maymount. Considered too small and light as a youth player, he later played with Colmcille's and Ballinlough before being selected on the Cork AUL. Noonan signed for Evergreen United (later Cork Celtic) for the 1953–54 season. He formed a close goal-scoring partnership with Donie Leahy and, after spending much of the 1958-59 season on the sideline with a troublesome right ankle injury, was the league's overall top scorer with 27 goals the following season. Noonan was honoured by the League of Ireland XI selectors on a couple of occasions, while his other honours include Top Four Cup, Shield, Dublin City Cup and Munster Senior Cup winners' medals. Joe McGrath (Irish Footballer)
Joe McGrath (born in Dublin) is an association football coach who managed the New Zealand national team. McGrath first took charge of the New Zealand side in May 1997. New Zealand won three, drew three and lost six of his 12 games in charge. He later coached Irish sides Bohemian F.C. and Kilkenny City. During his spell at Oriel Park McGrath won the 1964-65 LFA President's Cup. He moved to Drumcondra F.C. in March 1966 making his debut against his former club. He played twice against Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1966–67 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. On 5 June 1966 at Dalymount Park McGrath played in the first ever Republic of Ireland U23 game. He was also an amateur international. In November 1966 McGrath moved to Limerick F.C. and scored twice on his debut on the 20th. A fully qualified UEFA coach, he took over as Irish Youths team coach in 1985 in succession to Liam Tuohy (footballer) and was later appointed FAI Director of Coaching.
