South Africa National Rugby Union Team
The South Africa national rugby union team, commonly known as the Springboks (colloquially the Boks, Bokke or Amabokoboko), is the country's national team governed by the South African Rugby Union. The Springboks play in green and gold jerseys, with white shorts and their emblem is a native antelope, the Springbok, which is the national animal of South Africa. The team has been representing South Africa in international Rugby Union since 30 July 1891, when they played their first test match against a British Isles touring team. They are currently the reigning World Champions and have won the World Cup on 3 occasions, (1995, 2007, and 2019). The Springboks are equalled with the All Blacks with 3 World Cup wins. The team made its World Cup debut in 1995, when the newly democratic South Africa hosted the tournament. 1964 Wales Rugby Union Tour
The 1964 Wales rugby union tour of Africa was a collection of friendly rugby union games undertaken by the Wales national rugby union team to Africa. The tour took in five matches against African regional and invitational teams with one test against South Africa national rugby union team, South Africa. This was the first official Wales tour to the southern hemisphere; Wales' first match outside Europe (and thus their first match in the Southern Hemisphere) was played against East Africa rugby union team, East Africa on Tuesday May 12, 1964. The tour was not a success for Wales. Under the leadership of Clive Rowlands, Wales won the opening two games, but were unconvincing in the second match against Boland. Sewsunker "Papwa" Sewgolum
Sewsunker "Papwa" Sewgolum (Order of Ikhamanga, OIS) (12 December 1928 – 5 July 1978) was a South African professional golfer of ethnic South African Indians, Indian origin, who carved a niche for himself in Golf, golfing folklore when he became the first golfer of colour to win a provincial open in South Africa. He became a symbol of the Sporting boycott of South Africa during the apartheid era, sports boycott movement when pictures of him receiving his trophy outdoors in the rain were published across the world: due to apartheid, he was not allowed to enter the clubhouse. Personal life Sewgolum began his career as a caddie. He had five children with his wife, Suminthra. Career Sewgolum was a caddie for amateur golfer Graham Wulff. Dutch Open (golf)
The Dutch Open is an annual golf tournament played in the Netherlands, and has been part of the European Tour's schedule since the Tour was inaugurated in 1972. History and sponsorship Founded in 1912, the tournament began as the Dutch Open, before a variety of sponsors resulted in numerous name changes over the years. KLM was the longest title sponsor; lasting from 1981 to 1990, and from 2004 to 2020. The tournament has been moved around the golfing calendar, but since 2010 it has been held in early September. The event was cancelled in 2020 for the first time since 1945 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cobie Legrange
Cobie Legrange (born 1942) is a South African professional golfer. He was one of the best South African golfers of the 1960s and reached a peak ranking of #15 in the world. Professional career Legrange was born in Boksburg, South Africa. He played on the British circuit in 1962 but performed poorly. In April 1963, he returned to South Africa to improve his play. He maintained a very diligent practice schedule, practicing 8 hours a day, 5 days a week for the remainder of the year. The results immediately paid off. In the summer of 1964 he finished second in the French Open to Argentine legend Roberto De Vicenzo, taking him to a playoff. On 28 June 1964 he won the Dunlop Masters at Royal Birkdale Golf Club by one stroke. He built a 4-shot lead on the front nine but nearly lost it all. Dunlop Masters
The Betfred British Masters is a professional golf tournament. It was founded in 1946 as the Dunlop Masters and was held every year up to 2008, except for 1984. Dunlop's sponsorship ended in 1982, and the name sponsor changed frequently thereafter, with the words "British Masters" usually also in the tournament's official name. The tournament was not held from 2009 to 2014 but returned to the schedule in 2015. History The Dunlop Masters was first held in 1946 at Stoneham Golf Club in Southampton, and was a continuation of the Dunlop-Metropolitan Tournament which had been held before World War II. Like the Dunlop-Metropolitan, the Dunlop Masters was a 72-hole end-of-season event with a restricted field. The Dunlop-Metropolitan had been first played in 1934, the same year as The Masters.
