1964 European Nations' Cup
The 1964 European Nations' Cup was the second edition of the UEFA European Championship. The final tournament was held in Spain. It was won by the hosts 2–1 over the defending champions, the Soviet Union. The tournament was a knockout competition; 29 teams entered (Greece withdrew after being drawn against Albania). The Soviet Union, Austria and Luxembourg received byes to the round of 16. The teams played home-and-away matches until the semi-finals; the final four teams would move on to the final tournament, whose host was selected after the teams became known. Luxembourg proved to be the giant-killers of the qualifying rounds; they beat the Netherlands 3–2 on aggregate (1–1 and 2–1), and then drew with Denmark 3–3 and 2–2, before losing the replay 1–0. Denmark thus became the most surprising of the qualifiers for the final tournament, joining the Soviet Union, Spain, and Hungary. Kjeld Thorst
Kjeld Thorst (born 13 May 1940) is a Danish former association football player and manager. During his club career he played as a striker for Aalborg Boldspilklub (AaB), scoring 88 goals in 265 games, and winning the 1966 Danish Cup with the club. He scored six goals in 26 games for the Denmark national football team from 1963 to 1969, and represented Denmark at the 1964 European Nations' Cup tournament. In 1966 he became the first ever AaB player to captain the Danish national team. After ending his career, he was manager of AaB from 1976 to 1977. His son Søren Thorst also became a noted player for AaB, albeit as a defender. Ole Eduard Fischer Madsen (21 December 1934 – 26 March 2006 Camilla Dam ''Danmarks Radio'', 26 March 2006) was a Danish international footballer, who scored 42 goals in 50 matches for the Denmark national team and competed at the 1964 European Nations' Cup. He is best remembered for scoring on a heel kick against Sweden in 1965.
