1963–64 Liverpool F.C. Season
The 1963–64 season was the 72nd season in Liverpool F.C.'s existence and their second season back in the Football League's First Division. Liverpool won its first championship title since 1946-47, thanks to a spectacular performance in its only second season in the top flight. Manager Bill Shankly was hailed for the success, which meant the Scot had turned Liverpool from an average team in the Second Division to league champions in a little more than four years. Roger Hunt scored 31 league goals, while partner Ian St John managed 21 and Alf Arrowsmith 15, the trio being vital for the side that scored a club record 92 goals in the First Division. Chris Lawler
Chris Lawler (born 20 October 1943) is a former footballer who enjoyed much of Liverpool's success of the mid 1960s to early 1970s. Life and playing career A right-sided defender, Lawler joined his local club when he turned 17 in October 1960, and made his debut at the age of 19 in a 2–2 league draw with West Bromwich Albion at Anfield on 20 March 1963. For two seasons his progression into first team regular was gradual, playing just 6 matches in each of the seasons, but by 1965 he was the first choice right back. He scored the first of his many goals (for a right-back) during that season in a 5–1 defeat of Burnley at Turf Moor on 5 December 1964. Lawler's timing and anticipation, enabling him to turn up in the right place at the right time to score vital goals, earned him the nickname 'The Silent Knight'. Peter Thompson (footballer, Born 1942)
Peter Thompson (27 November 1942 Carlisle – 30 December 2018) was an English professional footballer. Thompson was known for his speedy and electric style of play. Thompson made 560 appearances in the English Football League, playing for Preston North End F.C., Liverpool F.C. and the Bolton Wanderers. Thompson played as an outside left for Liverpool , and was capped 16 times for England. Johnny Wheeler
John Edward Wheeler (26 July 1928 – 15 November 2019) was an English professional footballer. He played for Tranmere Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Liverpool and New Brighton. Club career Wheeler played club football for Carlton, Tranmere Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Liverpool and New Brighton. Gordon Wallace (footballer, Born 1944)
Gordon Wallace (born 13 June 1944 in Lanark) is a Scottish former association football, footballer, who played for Liverpool F.C., Liverpool during the 1960s. Career Wallace was raised in Wales after his father Dougie Wallace (footballer), Dougie, also a footballer, transferred to Llanelli Town A.F.C., Llanelli Town in 1949. Gordon attended school with future rugby union star Barry John and had trials with Huddersfield Town F.C, Huddersfield Town while Bill Shankly was the Yorkshire club's manager. Gordon Milne (born 29 March 1937) is an English former association football, football player and manager. Personal life Gordon Milne was born in Preston, Lancashire, England and is the son of the Scottish former Preston player Jimmy Milne (footballer, born 1911), Jimmy Milne and Jesse Milne. Jimmy Melia
James Melia (born 1 November 1937) is an English former footballer who spent most of his career playing for Liverpool and went on to become a manager. Playing career Liverpool Melia joined the Reds straight from St. Anthony's School as a 15-year-old, when manager Don Welsh saw the potential in the young schoolboy international's feet. Melia signed professional forms on his 17th birthday, 1 November 1954. After 23 appearances for Liverpool's reserve team, Melia made his début aged 18 on 17 December 1955 at Anfield in a 2nd Division fixture against Nottingham Forest. The visitors came up against an in form Billy Liddell who scored a hat-trick in the 5–2 victory, Jimmy also scored his first goal for the club in the 48th minute, John Evans got the other. Ian Callaghan
Ian Robert Callaghan MBE (born 10 April 1942) is an English retired professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He holds the record for most appearances for Liverpool. He was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 1975 New Year Honours. Playing career Liverpool Callaghan played 857 times for Liverpool between 1960 and 1978, breaking into the first team just after the appointment of Bill Shankly as Liverpool manager. Alan A'Court
Alan A'Court (30 September 1934 – 14 December 2009) was an English footballer who mostly played for Liverpool. He gained five caps for England and represented the nation at the 1958 FIFA World Cup. Playing career Born in Rainhill, Lancashire, England, A'Court was a winger who started out at Prescot Cables as an amateur before he was signed by Reds manager Don Welsh. A'Court made his debut in a league match at Ayresome Park on 7 February 1953, a game that saw Liverpool take both the points from a 3–2 win. Ron Yeats
Ronald Yeats (born 15 November 1937) is a Scottish former association footballer. He was a key defender in the rejuvenation of Dundee United in the early 1960s. He then spent a decade at Liverpool captaining them to six trophies in the mid-1960s. He later had three years as player/manager at Tranmere Rovers. Yeats was also player/manager at Barrow and Santa Barbara Condors. He also made appearances for the Scotland national team. Early years and Dundee United Yeats was an Under-15 schoolboy international who played for Aberdeen Lads' Club, a Junior club in his home town of Aberdeen.
