Homer Thornberry
William Homer Thornberry (January 9, 1909 – December 12, 1995) was an American politician and judge. He served as the United States representative from the 10th congressional district of Texas from 1949 to 1963. From 1963 to 1965 he was a judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas, and he was a judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit from 1965 to 1978. Early life Thornberry was born in Austin, Texas. His parents were teachers in the State School for the Deaf and were themselves deaf. He attended public schools in Austin and graduated from Austin High School in 1927. He received a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1932 from the University of Texas at Austin and his Bachelor of Laws in 1936, from the University of Texas School of Law, where he was a member of the Acacia fraternity. The 1942 United States House of Representatives elections were elections for the United States House of Representatives to elect members to serve in the 78th United States Congress. They were held for the most part on November 3, 1942, while Maine held theirs on September 14. This was the first election after the congressional reapportionment based on the 1940 census, and was held in the middle of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's third term. With involvement in World War II, it was the first wartime election in the United States since 1918. Roosevelt's Democratic Party lost 45 seats to the Republican Party, retaining only a slender majority even though they lost the popular vote by over 1 million votes (3.9%). Mark Andrews II (May 19, 1926 – October 3, 2020) was an American politician from the state of North Dakota. He was a member of the Republican Party who served in both chambers of the United States Congress, the United States House of Representatives from 1963 to 1981 and the United States Senate from 1981 to 1987. Life and career Andrews was born on May 19, 1926 in Cass County, North Dakota to Mark Andrews I and the former Lillian Hoyler, where he attended public school. In 1944 at the age of 18, Andrews was admitted to the United States Military Academy. He quit in 1946 after receiving a disability discharge. He then attended North Dakota State University at Fargo, North Dakota, where he became a member of the Gamma Tau chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity, and graduated in 1949. 1960 United States House Of Representatives Election In North Dakota
The 1960 United States House of Representatives elections were held on November 8, 1960, to elect members to serve in the 87th United States Congress. They coincided with the election of President John F. Kennedy. This was the first house election to feature all 50 current U.S. states. There were 437 seats, the most in U.S. history: 435 from the reapportionment in accordance with the 1950 census, and one seat for each of the new states of Alaska and Hawaii. Although Democrats retained control, it was the last time until 1988 that a victorious presidential candidate lost seats in the House. This was the most recent election cycle in which no new female representatives were elected to the House. Overall results 405 incumbent members sought reelection, but 5 were defeated in primaries and 25 defeated in the general election for a total of 375 incumbents winning. Hjalmar Nygaard (politician)
Hjalmar Carl Nygaard (March 24, 1906 – July 18, 1963) was an American politician. He represented North Dakota in the United States House of Representatives as a Republican from 1961 until his death in 1963. Background Nygaard was born on a farm near Sharon, Steele County, North Dakota. He was one of eight children born to Carl Nygaard and Anna Karene Grimson who had relocated from Decorah, Iowa. He attended the public schools of Sharon, Mayville State Teachers College and the University of North Dakota. Career Nygaard taught in the rural schools of Emmons and Steele counties from 1932 to 1935 and was engaged in the grocery and hardware businesses from 1936 to 1960. He served as mayor of Sharon and as a member of the school board and then as member of the North Dakota House of Representatives from 1949 to 1960.
