Red Auerbach
Arnold Jacob "Red" Auerbach (September 20, 1917 – October 28, 2006) was an American professional basketball coach and executive. He served as a head coach in the National Basketball Association (NBA), most notably with the Boston Celtics. Auerbach was also the head coach of the Washington Capitols and Tri-Cities Blackhawks. As a coach, Auerbach set NBA records with 938 wins and nine List of NBA championship head coaches, championships. After his coaching retirement in 1966, he served as president and front office executive of the Celtics until his death. As general manager and team president of the Celtics, he won an additional seven NBA titles for a grand total of 16 in a span of 29 years, making him one of the most successful team officials in the history of North American professional sports. The 1962–63 NBA season was the Detroit Pistons' 15th season in the NBA and sixth season in the city of Detroit. The Pistons finished with a 34-46 (.425) record, 3rd place in the Western Division. The team would advance to the 1963 NBA Playoffs, losing their first round series 3-1 to the St. Louis Hawks. The team was led by forward Bailey Howell (22.7 ppg, 11.5 rpg, NBA All-Star), guard Don Ohl (19.3 ppg) and rookie forward Dave DeBusschere from the University of Detroit (12.7 ppg, 8.7 rpg, All-Rookie Team), who was the team's top pick in the 1962 NBA Draft. 1962–63 Cincinnati Royals Season
The 1962–63 Cincinnati Royals season was the team's 15th season in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and its sixth in Cincinnati. The Royals were shifted from the Western Division into the Eastern Division before the start of the season because the Philadelphia Warriors had relocated to San Francisco. In their first season in the Eastern Division, the Royals posted a 42–38 record and finished in 3rd place. The season saw the Royals challenged by a rival league, the American Basketball League run by Abe Saperstein, like few NBA teams ever have been. Larry Staverman and Win Wilfong had left the team for the new league. #1 draft picks Larry Siegfried and Jerry Lucas were both also signed away by the ABL. These key losses would later greatly affect the team's playoffs result. Lucas was particularly missed by Cincinnati fans. The 1962–63 NBA season was the Zephyrs' 2nd season in the NBA, as well as their only season under the Zephyrs name after going under the Packers name the previous season and their final season in the Windy City before the franchise's relocation to Baltimore as a new Baltimore Bullets team for the following season.
