1962 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 31 March 1962 to elect all 50 members to the Legislative Assembly. The Liberal-Country coalition government, led by Premier Sir David Brand, won a second term in office against the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader Albert Hawke. The election resulted in a confirmation of the status quo, with the only apparent seat changes since the 1959 election being due to the changes of affiliation of the two Independent Liberal members. Edward Oldfield, representing Mount Lawley, had joined the Labor Party during the previous term, whilst Bill Grayden, representing South Perth, had joined the Liberal Party. Both were re-elected. Two seats changed between the Country and LCL Parties. Western Australian Legislative Assembly
The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. The Parliament sits in Parliament House in the Western Australian capital, Perth. The Legislative Assembly today has 59 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member electoral districts. Members are elected using the preferential voting system. As with all other Australian states and territories, voting is compulsory for all Australian citizens over the legal voting age of 18. Role and operation Most legislation in Western Australia is initiated in the Legislative Assembly. The party or coalition that can command a majority in the Legislative Assembly is invited by the Governor to form a government. Bill Grayden
William Leonard Grayden (born Wilbur Ives; 5 August 1920) is an Australian former politician. He was a member of parliament across six decades, serving in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly (1947–1949, 1956–1993) and the Australian House of Representatives (1949–1954). A World War II veteran, he served as a Liberal with the exception of a brief period as an independent. Grayden was a backbencher in federal parliament, but later held ministerial office in the state government of Charles Court (1974–1978, 1980–1982). Electoral District Of Bunbury
Bunbury is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district, taking in the city of Bunbury has existed continuously since 1890, being one of the original 30 seats contested at the 1890 general election. From 1974 to 2005 the seat was always held by the party of government, making it an effective bellwether. Two early Premiers of Western Australia, Sir John Forrest and Sir Newton Moore, held Bunbury during their time in office. However, after Moore's retirement in 1911, another member for Bunbury was not appointed to a cabinet post until 2008, when John Castrilli became Minister for Local Government under Colin Barnett. Hugh Guthrie (Australian Politician)
Hugh Norman Guthrie (2 July 1910 – 28 January 2000) was an Australian politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1959 to 1971, representing the seat of Subiaco. He served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 1968 to 1971. Early life Guthrie was born in the remote mining town of Laverton, to Annie (née Hutchinson) and Wemyss Manley Guthrie. He attended Hale School and the University of Western Australia, and after training as a lawyer was admitted to practise in 1933. Guthrie enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force in 1939, and saw service in the Middle East with the 2/16th Infantry Battalion. Later he was commissioned as an officer and served in New Guinea where he was wounded while serving at Sanananda with the 49th Infantry Battalion. Electoral District Of Subiaco
The Electoral district of Subiaco was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Western Australia. The district was named for the inner western Perth suburb of Subiaco, which fell within its borders. It was normally a safe seat for the Liberal Party and its predecessors, but was won on several occasions by Labor in landslide elections. Subiaco was a new seat created under the ''Constitution Acts Amendment Act 1899'', which took effect at the 1901 election, where it was won by Labor candidate Henry Daglish. In 1903, he became leader of the eight-member Parliamentary Labor Party, succeeding Robert Hastie, and in a want of confidence motion on 10 August 1904 following the 1904 election, he became premier at the head of a minority government supported by four independents. Leslie Charles "Les" Nimmo (23 February 1897 – 6 November 1972) was an Australian politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1947 to 1956 and again from 1959 to 1968. Nimmo was born in Hobart, Tasmania, to Frances (née Grahame) and James Nimmo. He served with the Royal Australian Navy during World War I, and on his return to Hobart worked as a shop assistant. Ray Owen (politician)
Raymond Cecil Owen (1 March 1905 – 16 January 2003) was an Australian agricultural scientist and politician. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1944 to 1947 and again from 1950 to 1962. Owen was initially elected as an independent, but joined the Country Party in 1949. Early life Owen was born in Pickering Brook, Western Australia (on the outskirts of Perth), to Mary Ellen (née Passmore) and Oliver Edward Owen. He graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1923 with a diploma in agriculture, and later returned to university to complete a Bachelor of Science degree, which he received in 1934. Owen began working for the Agriculture Department in 1924, initially at the head office in Perth. He was later based for periods in Kalamunda, Manjimup, and Mount Barker. Ken Dunn
Kenneth Wathen Dunn (17 May 1912 – 30 July 1976) was an Australian politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1962 to 1971, representing the seat of Darling Range. Dunn was born in Perth to Georgina Eustace (née Caporn) and Kenneth Wathen Dunn. He attended Guildford Grammar School, and then found work as a clerk. In 1940, Dunn enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, and was posted to the 2/7th Field Regiment. He saw active duty in the Middle East and Borneo, and was involved in the Landing at Tarakan. After the war, Dunn worked for periods as a Vacuum Oil salesman, as a tearoom-operator in Kalamunda, and as a real estate agent. Electoral District Of Darling Range
Darling Range is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district is based to the east and south-east of Perth. Geography Darling Range is situated in the outer east and south-east of Perth. It is a mixture of suburbia and hinterland, falling inside the Metropolitan Region Scheme and running along most of its southern and eastern boundary. The district covers all of the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale as well as the less urbanised parts of the city of Armadale. History Darling Range was first created for the 1950 state election. The seat's first member was Country MP Ray Owen, who was previously the member for Swan. The district was abolished ahead of the 1974 state election. Harry Gayfer
Harry Walter Gayfer (12 August 1925 – 15 July 2021) was an Australian politician who served in both houses of the Parliament of Western Australia. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly from 1962 to 1974, and then a member of the Legislative Council from 1974 to 1989. Gayfer was born in London, England, but moved to Western Australia as an infant. He attended Scotch College, Perth, and was the school's head prefect in 1942. After leaving school, Gayfer began farming at Corrigin, in Western Australia's Wheatbelt region.
