1962 Dominican Republic General Election
General elections were held in the Dominican Republic on 20 December 1962.Dieter Nohlen (2005) ''Elections in the Americas: A data handbook, Volume I'', p247 They were the first after the end of the Rafael Trujillo, Trujillo dictatorship two years earlier, and are generally regarded to be the first free elections in the country's history. Juan Bosch (politician), Juan Bosch of the democratic socialist Dominican Revolutionary Party won the presidential election, whilst his party also won the Congressional elections. There was also an election for a Constituent assembly, Constituent National Assembly, which was to amend certain articles of the constitution. However, reforms implemented by Bosch alienated the United States, American government and the local oligarchy, leading to a coup the following year, and eventually the Dominican Civil War. Juan Bosch (politician)
Juan Emilio Bosch Gaviño (30 June 1909 – 1 November 2001) was a Dominican politician, historian, writer, essayist, educator, and the first democratically-elected president of the Dominican Republic for a brief time in 1963. Previously, he had been the leader of the Dominican opposition in exile to the dictatorial regime of Rafael Trujillo for over 25 years. To this day, he is remembered as an honest politician and regarded as one of the most prominent writers in Dominican literature. He founded both the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) in 1939 and the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) in 1973. Early life He was born to a Catalan father and a Puerto Rican mother of Galician descent. In 1934, he married Isabel García and had two children with her: Leon and Carolina. Joaquín Antonio Balaguer Ricardo (1 September 1906 – 14 July 2002) was a Dominican politician, scholar, writer, and lawyer. He was President of the Dominican Republic serving three non-consecutive terms for that office from 1960 to 1962, 1966 to 1978, and 1986 to 1996. His enigmatic, secretive personality was inherited from the Trujillo era, as well as his desire to perpetuate himself in power through dubious elections and state terrorism, and he was considered to be a ''caudillo''. His regime of terror claimed 11,000 victims who were either tortured or forcibly disappeared and killed. Juan Isidro Jimenes Grullón (born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on June 17, 1903 – August 10, 1983) was a Dominican essayist, historian, physician, philosopher, educator and politician. Biography Born to José Manuel Jimenes Domínguez (son of Juan Isidro Jimenes Pereyra and María Josefa de los Santos Domínguez Gómez) and María Filomena Grullón Ricardo. Jimenes completed his primary and secondary education in Santo Domingo, receiving a Bachelor of Arts. He then entered the Faculty of Law at the University of Santo Domingo, but his passion for philosophy made him abandon this course. Pressured by his family, he left for Paris (1923) to study medicine. In 1929 he received his medical degree and returned to Santo Domingo the following year.
