1962 Bahamian General Election
General elections were held in the Bahamas on 26 November 1962, the first under universal suffrage. Geoffrey Johnstone
Sir Geoffrey Adams Dinwiddie Johnstone, (19 September 1927 – 4 August 2017) was a Bahamian politician and lawyer. Early life and education Johnstone was born in Nassau, Bahamas, on 19 September 1927, the eldest son of the late Bruce Eric Johnstone and Wilhelmina Helena Aline Johnstone née Kemp. He graduated from Queen's College secondary school, Nassau, Bahamas in September 1945 and began working an insurance agent for the British American Insurance Company. In 1947, he enrolled in the Inns of Court School of Law and was called to the Bar of England and Wales at the Middle Temple in June 1950. He was called to the Bahamas Bar in August 1950. Law career In August 1950, Johnstone joined the firm of Higgs & Johnson and was admitted to partnership in 1952. He became senior partner in 1968 and served in that capacity until his retirement in December 1998. Cyril Stevenson
Cyril St. John Stevenson (July 13, 1914 – November 6, 2006) was a Bahamian politician and newspaper publisher. Stevenson, Sir Henry Milton Taylor and William Cartwright, co-founded the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) in 1953, the first national political party to be established in the Bahamas. Biography Stevenson was born in Nassau, Bahamas, on July 13, 1914. He was the youngest child of Henry Macauley "Harry" Stevenson and Georgianna Louise "Lulie" Stevenson. His father died in 1915 when he was just fifteen months old. He began a career in journalism as a reporter for the ''Bahamas Weekly News''. In 1953, Stevenson, Sir Henry Milton Taylor and William Cartwright, co-founded the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP). Lynden Pindling
Sir Lynden Oscar Pindling, NH, KCMG, PC, JP (22 March 193026 August 2000) was a Bahamian politician who is regarded as the "Father of the Nation" of the Bahamas, having led it to majority rule on 10 January 1967 and to independence on 10 July 1973. He served as the first black premier of the Colony of the Bahama Islands from 1967 to 1969 and as Prime Minister of the Bahamas from 1969 to 1992. He was leader of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) from 1956 to 1997 when he resigned from public life under scandal. Pindling won an unbroken string of general elections until 1992, when the PLP lost to the Free National Movement (FNM) led by Hubert Alexander Ingraham.
