''I Like Mike'' is a 1961 Israeli drama film directed by Canadian-born Peter Frye. It was entered into the 1961 Cannes Film Festival. It was based on Aharon Megged's play, which was performed at the Habima theatre. Plot Yafa Arieli wants to marry her daughter, Tamara to Mike, a young American and son of a Texas tycoon visiting in Israel, but Tamara is in love with Micha, a Nahal officer and a poor kibbutznik. During his flight to Israel, Mike sees a newspaper picture of a Yemenite soldier, falls in love with her, and swears to find her. Peter Frye
Peter Frye (1914-1991; born Peter Friedman) was a Canadian actor, screenwriter and film director. Frye, who was Jewish, was born on March 1, 1914, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Frye, who spoke fluent English, French, German, Hebrew and Spanish, fought in the Spanish Civil War from 1937 to 1938 as a member of the XV International Brigade and was wounded in action. He emigrated to Israel in the 1950s and became a drama professor at the University of Tel Aviv, and also worked as a stage director, actor, screenwriter and film director. He moved to the United Kingdom in the 1970s. Frye co-wrote the screenplay for the 1954 Israel war film ''Hill 24 Doesn't Answer'' ('' he, גבעה 24 אינה עונה; ''), the first feature film produced in Israel. The 14th Cannes Film Festival was held from 3 to 18 May 1961. The Palme d'Or went to the ''Une aussi longue absence'', directed by Henri Colpi and ''Viridiana'', directed by Luis Buñuel. The festival opened with ''Che gioia vivere'', directed by René Clément. The festival also screened Shirley Clarke's debut film '' The Connection'' due to the efforts of the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics.
