1961 NSWSF Season
The 1961 New South Wales Federation of Soccer Clubs (NSWSF) season was the fifth season of football in New South Wales under the administration of the federation since its breakaway from the NSW Soccer Football Association in January of 1957. The home and away league season began on the 15th of April with twelve teams, reducing the number of teams by two compared to the previous season. Sydney Prague were Federation Premiers for a third consecutive season after finishing first on the ladder of the twenty-two round regular season. After defeating Federation Premiers, Prague, in the preliminary final, Hakoah went on to defeat reigning champions Canterbury-Marrickville 4–1 in the grand final to be crowned Federation Champions for the first time. Other tournaments held this season once again included the Ampol Cup and the Federation Cup (this year renamed the 'Craven A' Cup). Football New South Wales
Football NSW is the governing body for association football, soccer in the Australian state of New South Wales, with the exception of the northern regions of NSW (the governing body for which is Northern New South Wales Football). Football NSW is a member of the national governing body, Football Australia. Football NSW's premier football competition is the National Premier Leagues NSW. Balgownie Rangers FC
Balgownie Rangers Football Club is an association football club based in Balgownie, New South Wales. They play in the Illawarra District League. Founded in 1883, Balgownie is believed to be the oldest running association football club in Australia. History Balgownie Rangers is the oldest running registered association football club in Australia, being formed in 1883. The club was formed in 1883 where it played against other social clubs and also between Balgownie teams. In 1890, Balgownie Rangers was officially registered to play in the newly formed N.S.W. Football Association. Balgownie was the 4th club to form in Australia. Wanderers, Arcadian and Granville had formed 1883. Woonona
Woonona () is a suburb north of Wollongong, New South Wales, Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, south of Sydney. It is served by Woonona railway station, New South Wales, Woonona Station on the South Coast railway line, New South Wales, South Coast Line, and by the Princes Highway. Corrimal United
Safeway United were a former football (soccer) club based in the Illawarra. They were formed by influential members of the Corrimal Rangers in 1958. For most of the club's existence they were known as South Coast United when they amalgamated with ''Woonona-Bulli Soccer Club'' in 1961 before changing their name to Safeway United in 1973 when they were financially backed by Safeway Motors. The club played in the NSW First Division before being absorbed by fellow Wollongong-based club, Balgownie Rangers prior to the creation of the first national league, the National Soccer League. This meant that the club played at the highest level of soccer in Australia for all 17 years of the clubs existence. North Sydney Oval
North Sydney Oval (Also known as “Bear Park” by North Sydney Bears fans) is a multi-use sporting facility in Miller Street, North Sydney, Australia, owned and operated by North Sydney Council. First used as a cricket ground in 1867, it is also used for Australian rules football, rugby league, rugby union and soccer. History Development The first cricket pitch was laid on 6 December 1867, making it one of the oldest cricket grounds in Australia. A simple pavilion overlooking the cricket ground was the first structure at the oval, built in 1879 and replaced in 1909. This was replaced by another pavilion which in turn was replaced by what is now the Duncan Thompson Stand in 1929. Drummoyne Oval
Drummoyne Oval is a multi-use sports ground in the Sydney inner-west suburb of Drummoyne, New South Wales. The ground has been used for international women's cricket matches, domestic men's cricket matches and first grade rugby league as well as local Australian rules football and Rugby Union games. The stadium has a capacity of 5,500 people and opened in 1931. Ground Usage Between 1932 and 1934, Balmain played their home games at the ground before moving to Leichhardt Oval. The final first grade game to be played at the ground was in 1950 when Balmain defeated Eastern Suburbs 20–11. In 1995, the ground hosted an Under 19s cricket test match between Australia, featuring a young Brett Lee, and India while in the 2009 Women's Cricket World Cup, five games were played there. Sydney Olympic Football Club is an Australian semi-professional soccer club, based in Belmore, Sydney, New South Wales, that plays in the National Premier Leagues NSW. The club was founded as Pan-Hellenic Soccer Club in 1957 by Greek immigrants. In 1977, the club changed its name to Sydney Olympic and became a founding member of the Phillips Soccer League, later named the National Soccer League (NSL), the inaugural national football league of Australia, remaining a member of the competition until its demise in 2004. Wentworth Park
Wentworth Park is a park near the suburbs of Glebe and Ultimo in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The park contains several multi-purpose sporting pitches, cricket nets and a number of fitness installations. There is a playground in the southern area of the park and seating for picnics. Public toilets are next to the sports field. In the centre of the park is the Wentworth Park Sporting Complex. History Wentworth Park was initially a creek and swamp, known from the 1830s as Blackwattle Cove Swamp. Between the 1830s and 1860s, various toxic industries were established along the shore, including, in particular, abattoirs and boiling down works. Maccabi Hakoah Sydney City East FC, commonly known as Maccabi Hakoah, is an Australian semi-professional soccer club based in Sydney, New South Wales. The club was formed in 1939 as Sydney Hakoah by members of Sydney's Jewish community. They played between 1977 and 1986 in the National Soccer League as Eastern Suburbs (1977–1979) and Sydney City (1979–1987). One of the most successful sides in New South Wales and interstate competitions in the 1960s and early 1970s coached by the now retired Bob Szatmari, Hakoah were also one of the main instigators for the establishment of a national league. The Arlington Recreation Ground (known as Arlington Oval) is a soccer stadium in Dulwich Hill, Sydney, Australia with a capacity of 6,000. This public football pitch is home to Dulwich Hill FC and Inner West Hawks (formerly Stanmore Hawks) youth and senior squads. As well as Sydney Uni SFC youth teams. Sydney Athletics Field
ES Marks Athletics Field is located in Kensington, Sydney, Australia. It was built in 1906 as Sydney Athletics Field. In 1947 a cinder track was installed and it was renamed ES Marks Athletics Field after athletics administrator Ernest Samuel Marks. In 1956 a grandstand was built. Wiley Park is a suburb in south-western Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Wiley Park is located 17 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district in the City of Canterbury-Bankstown. History The now comprising Wiley Park was initially part of of land granted to Robert Wilkinson in 1832. It passed to the Wiley family in 1862. Wiley Park is named after the reserve of that was bequeathed in the will of Mr. J.V. Wiley in 1906 for a park and recreational ground for local residents. Wiley was a shoemaker who died unmarried and without children.
