1959 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament
The 1959 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was the culmination of the 1958–59 NCAA men's ice hockey season, the 12th such tournament in NCAA history. It was held between March 12 and 14, 1959, and concluded with North Dakota defeating Michigan State 4-3 in overtime. All games were played at the RPI Field House in Troy, New York. This was the last tournament to be won by an independent school. (as of 2016) Qualifying teams Four teams qualified for the tournament, two each from the eastern and western regions. The Big Ten and Tri-State League champions received bids into the tournament as did two independent schools. Format The Tri-State League champion was seeded as the top eastern team while the Big Ten champion was given the top western seed. Houston Field House
Houston Field House is a multi-purpose arena located on the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York. It is the nation's third-oldest college hockey rink, behind Northeastern University's Matthews Arena and Princeton University's Hobey Baker Memorial Rink. Further, it is the second-oldest arena in the ECAC Hockey League, behind Princeton's rink. Until the opening of the Times Union Center in Albany in 1990, it was the largest arena in the Capital Region. Origins Popular legend holds that Houston Field House was previously an airplane or dirigible hangar for the United States armed forces during World War II. In reality, it originated as a warehouse for the United States Navy in Davisville, Rhode Island. Bill MacKenzie (ice Hockey Forward)
William Kenneth MacKenzie (December 12, 1911 — May 29, 1990) was a Canadian ice hockey defenceman. He played in the National Hockey League for the Chicago Black Hawks, New York Rangers, Montreal Maroons, and Montreal Canadiens between 1932 and 1940. Playing career MacKenzie was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He started his National Hockey League career with the Chicago Black Hawks in 1932. He also played for the Montreal Maroons, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Rangers. In January 1935 Bill MacKenzie was loaned to the New York Rangers, for the rest of season, for cash. In the Stanley Cup semi-finals Montreal Maroons defeated the New York Rangers, then defeated Toronto in the Finals. MacKenzie's name somehow was included on the cup, even though he was member of Rangers at the time the Maroons won the Stanley Cup. After the season ended MacKenzie was returned to the Maroons. Pat Presley
Pat Presley is a Canadian retired ice hockey defenseman who was a 2-time All-American for St. Lawrence. Career After finishing his junior career in the Quebec-area, Presley was able to earn an athletic scholarship to St. Lawrence, near his home town of Ottawa. After a year with the freshman team Presley became an instant hit not only for the Saints, but for all of college hockey. He became one of the select few players to earn First Team All-American honors in his first season of play despite the Larries performing less impressively than they had in recent seasons. In his junior season the team posted its worst season since World War II, winning just ten games and finishing last in the Tri-State League. For his final season the team had a resurgence with Presley leading the defensive corps. List Of NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey All-Tournament Teams
NCAA All-Tournament team is an honor bestowed at the conclusion of the NCAA Division I ice hockey tournament to the players judged to have performed the best during the championship. The team is currently composed of three forwards, two defensemen and one goaltender with additional players named in the event of a tie. Voting for the honor was conducted by the head coaches of each member team once the tournament has completed and any player regardless of their team's finish is eligible. The All-Tournament Team began being awarded after the first championship in 1948 along with an All-Tournament Second-Team. The second team was dropped after the 1969 tournament and it has remained a single team ever since except for 1976 when no team was selected. In recent years the regional tournaments have begun to name all-tournament teams of their own, making the NCAA All-Tournament team draw only from the teams and performances in the Frozen Four. Joe Selinger
Joe Selinger is a Canadian retired ice hockey goaltender who was an All-American for Michigan State and led the team it its first NCAA tournament appearance in 1959. Career Selinger was the starting goalie for the Regina Pats when the team won the Abbott Cup in 1955. The following fall he began attending Michigan State University and would help turn around a moribund program. To that point, MSU had finished in either last or second-last in the WIHL and had never finished with a record of even .400. While he was on the freshman team, the Spartans continued that trend and won one of eighteen conference games. When Selinger made the varsity team the following season the team still finished in last place, but quintupled their WIHL victory totals while lowering the team's goals against by 25.
