1958–59 Tanganyikan General Election
General elections were held in Tanganyika in September 1958 and February 1959. Paul Bomani
Paul Lazaro Bomani (January 1, 1925 – April 1, 2005) was a Tanzanian politician and ambassador to the United States and Mexico. Biography Paul Bomani was born in 1925 in Ikuzi, Mara. He served as the Minister of Finance, Agriculture, Economic Affairs and Planning, and Commerce and Industry. He also served as a member of Parliament. Paul Bomani was a very successful business man and was reported to be one of the richest African in Tanzania by 1970. Paul Bomani is among a handful of Tanganyikans/Tanzanians who made significant contributions to the country. General elections were held in Tanganyika (territory), Tanganyika on 30 August 1960, following the agreement of the United Kingdom to establish internal self-government for the territory. The Tanganyika African National Union won 70 of the 71 elected seats, whilst the other went to a TANU member who had stood against the official TANU candidate, and immediately joined TANU faction after being elected. Fundikira III
Abdallah Said Fundikira III (2 February 1921 – 6 August 2007) was the Ntemi (chief) of Unyanyembe 1957–1962/2007, when he was deposed by the Tanzanian government. He died as a member of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi party. Early life Fundikira attended his primary education at Tanga Primary School. He undertook middle school education at the same school and later joined Tabora School for secondary education where he graduated in 1939. Fundikira joined Makerere University in Uganda from 1940 to 1946 and was conferred with a first degree in Agriculture. In 1957, he was ordained as chief of the Nyamwezi in the Nyanyembe chiefdom. In 1961 soon after independence, the first Chief Minister Julius Nyerere appointed Fundikira as minister for water, a portfolio he served for one year. He was appointed the first local justice minister when Tanganyika became a republic in 1962. He resigned from the Cabinet in 1963 to protest the imminent legislation introducing a one party state. Barbro Cecilia Johansson (September 25, 1912 – 7 December 1999) was a Swedish-Tanzanian missionary. Biography Barbro was born in St. John's Parish Malmö, the third largest city in Sweden on September 12, 1912. She was the daughter of Anders Johansson and school teacher Betzy Persson Hussénius. After studying to become a teacher in Sweden, she traveled in 1946 to Tanzania (formerly known as Tanganyika) to serve in the Church of Sweden (the Evangelical Lutheran Swedish state church).
