1958 Victorian Legislative Council Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Victoria on Saturday 21 June 1958 to elect 17 of the 34 members of the state's Legislative Council for six year terms. MLCs were elected in single-member provinces using preferential voting. This was the last time Legislative Council elections were held separately to those of the Legislative Assembly. Maurie Sheehy
Maurice Patrick Sheehy (12 June 1893 – 10 January 1961) was an Australian politician, and a member of the Victorian Legislative Council for Melbourne Province. As a young man, "Maurie" Sheehy (as he was then known) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood Football Club, Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (1897–1989), Victorian Football League (VFL). As an older gentleman, Sheehy was a politician, better known as Patrick Sheehy. Sports notoriety Sheehy began his sports career at Collingwood in 1914. After just two games he crossed to Fairfield Football Club, Fairfield where he spent the 1915 football season. The Northcote District recruit returned to Collingwood the following year and went on to appear in four Grand finals, Grand Finals. A back pocket in their 1919 premiership team, Sheehy also participated in the club's losing 1918, 1920 and 1922 Grand Final sides. Jack O'Connell (Australian Politician)
Geoffrey John O'Connell (16 June 1903 – 20 April 1972) was an Australian politician. He was born in Richmond, Victoria, Richmond to contractor John O'Connell and Annie McNamara. He was a tanner and publican before entering politics, and joined the Australian Labor Party (Victorian Branch), Labor Party around 1919. He was the cousin of Jack Cremean and Bert Cremean, both Labor politicians, and on 18 December 1926 married Lillian May Lester, with whom he had four children. He served on City of Richmond, Richmond City Council from 1948 to 1972, and was mayor from 1957 to 1958 and from 1964 to 1965. In 1958 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council for Melbourne Province. He served until his death in Richmond in 1972. References

Melbourne Province
Melbourne Province was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council (Australia). Melbourne Province was created in 1882 when Central Province was abolished in the redistribution of Provinces. Its area included central Melbourne, Carlton, Fawkner Park and Richmond. William Hearn and James Lorimer transferred from Central to Melbourne Province that year. In 1904, another redistribution occurred and Melbourne East Province, Melbourne North Province, Melbourne South Province, Melbourne West Province were created. The number of members representing Melbourne Province were reduced from four to two that year. Arthur Warner
Sir Arthur George Warner (31 July 1899 – 3 April 1966) was an English-born Australian businessman and politician. He was born in London to manager Arthur Warner and Emily Cheeseman. He attended Sir George Monoux Grammar School and worked as a telephone mechanic before studying science at the University of London. During World War I he served in the Royal Navy and the Royal Flying Corps, and following the war he migrated to Australia and became a soldier settler in Scottsdale in Tasmania. He soon moved to Melbourne and, having qualified by correspondence, worked as an accountant. On 14 August 1920, he married Ethel Wakefield, with whom he had two sons. Higinbotham Province
Higinbotham Province was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council. It existed as a two-member electorate from 1937 to 2006, with members serving alternating eight-year terms. It was considered a safe seat for the Liberal throughout its history, though it was won by Labor candidate Noel Pullen in Labor's landslide victory at the 2002 state election. Bill Fulton (Victorian Politician)
William Oliver Fulton (24 February 1891 – 27 August 1975) was an Australian politician. He was born in Mooroopna to butcher George Fulton and Caroline Eatwell. Educated locally, he became a blacksmith at Charlton and Wonthaggi, and served with the 13th Light Horse Regiment in World War I. On 24 April 1915 he married Mary Emma Lancaster, with whom he had five children. In 1921 he settled at Maffra, where he became a manufacturer of agricultural implements. In 1942 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Country Party member for Gippsland North. Defeated in 1945, he was returned in 1947. In 1950 he was appointed Minister of Health in the Country Party government, but he lost his seat in 1952. Gippsland Province
Gippsland Province was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council from November 1882 until 2006. It was based in the Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. Gippsland Province was created in the redistribution of provinces in 1882 when the Central and Eastern Provinces were abolished. The new Gippsland, North Central, South Yarra, North Yarra, South Eastern and Melbourne Provinces were then created. Clifden Eager
Sir Clifden Henry Andrews Eager (14 June 1882 – 11 August 1969) was an Australian politician. He was born in Sorrento to Irish-born Anglican reader Clifden Henry Eager and Kate Amelia Andrews. He attended state schools and then the University of Melbourne, where he received a Bachelor of Law in 1909 and a Master of Law in 1910. Around 1909 he married Ernestine Isabella May Campton, with whom he had five children. He was a barrister from 1911. In 1930 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council as a Nationalist member for East Yarra Province. He took silk in 1935, and during that year was briefly a minister without portfolio. Rupert Hamer
Sir Rupert James Hamer, (29 July 1916 – 23 March 2004), generally known until he was knighted in 1982 as Dick Hamer, was an Australian Liberal Party politician who served as the 39th Premier of Victoria from 1972 to 1981. Early years Hamer was born in Melbourne to Elizabeth Anne McLuckie and Hubert Hamer, a solicitor.
