1957 VFL Season
The 1957 VFL season was the 61st season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 20 April until 21 September, and comprised an 18-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Melbourne Football Club for the ninth time and third time consecutively, after it defeated by 61 points in the 1957 VFL Grand Final. Background In 1957, the VFL competition consisted of twelve teams of 18 on-the-field players each, plus two substitute players, known as the 19th man and the 20th man. A player could be substituted for any reason; however, once substituted, a player could not return to the field of play under any circumstances. Jack Collins (footballer, Born 1930)
John Charles "Jack" Collins (3 January 1930 – 6 July 2008) was an Australian rules footballer who represented in the Victorian Football League (VFL). His father, Jim Collins, who had been the captain-coach of the Yarraville Football Club from 1918 to 1919, played 30 senior games for from 1919 to 1921. Collins was recruited to Footscray in 1950 from the Yarraville Football Club, and, for the next two years, he won the club's best-and-fairest award (later designated the Charles Sutton Medal). In 1953, Collins fronted the VFL Tribunal twice. In June, he was cleared of a striking charge against captain Ron Clegg, but later in the season he was involved in an incident with 's Frank Tuck. Both players were reported following a fierce fight and were subsequently suspended. Windy Hill (officially known as Essendon Recreation Reserve) is an Australian rules football and cricket ground located in Napier Street, Essendon, a northwestern suburb of the Melbourne metropolitan area. ABV is the call sign of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's television station in Melbourne, Victoria. History The station began broadcasting on 19 November 1956 and is transmitted throughout the state via a network of relay transmitters. HSV is a television station in Melbourne, Australia. It is part of the Seven Network, one of the three main commercial television networks in Australia, its first and oldest station. It launched in time for the 1956 Summer Olympic Games in Melbourne. HSV-7 is the home of Australian Football League, AFL coverage. The HSV building (also known as 'Broadcast Centre Melbourne') was the network's operations hub, where the Master Control Room was located, controlling all metropolitan and regional feeds. Antony Erling Charlton, AM (28 March 1929 – 17 December 2012) was an Australian radio and television sports broadcaster. Early life Charlton's parents were both from New Zealand. His father, Conrad, was a baritone opera singer, who worked with the prominent theatre company of J.C. Williamson's, who became a radio broadcaster and station manager of the ABC, who had served in World War I and was wounded during the Battle of the Somme. His mother, Hazel, was an opera singer.
