1956–57 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Season
The 1956–57 NCAA men's ice hockey season began in November 1956 and concluded with the 1957 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament's championship game on March 16, 1957 at the Broadmoor Ice Palace in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This was the 10th season in which an NCAA ice hockey championship was held and is the 63rd year overall where an NCAA school fielded a team. Broadmoor World Arena (1938)
The Broadmoor World Arena was a skating rink and hockey arena located at The Broadmoor Resort & Spa in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Originally an outdoor equestrian center and riding academy, the building was enclosed and converted into an ice arena which opened in January 1938. It was the original home of the Colorado College Tigers hockey team, as well as the Broadmoor Skating Club, a major force in the figure skating community. The building served as the first home of the NCAA Hockey Championships, hosting the first ten Final Fours (1948–1957) and once more, in 1969. The arena served as host to the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships in 1962. It also hosted the World Figure Skating Championships five times between 1957 and 1975. Denver Pioneers Men's Ice Hockey
The Denver Pioneers men's ice hockey team is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college ice hockey program that represents the University of Denver. The Pioneers are a member of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC). They play at Magness Arena in Denver, Colorado. The Pioneers are tied with Michigan for the most all-time NCAA National Hockey Championships with nine (1958, 1960, 1961, 1968, 1969, 2004, 2005, 2017, 2022). Previously, the Pioneers were members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), from its creation in 1959 to the end of its men's hockey competition in 2013. Don Wishart
Don Wishart was a Canadian ice hockey defenseman and forward who captained Colorado College to the National Championship in 1957. Career Wishart's junior career was rife with success as he helped the Flin Flon Bombers win three consecutive league championships. After he aged out of the Canadian junior league, Wishart joined Colorado College on an athletic scholarship and immediately joined the varsity ice hockey team. That year the Tigers jumped from 4th to 1st in the WIHL and, with Wishart playing both forward and defense for CC, they made the NCAA tournament for the first time in three years. The Tigers escaped with a close victory over St. Lawrence in the semifinal but, despite scoring in the championship match, Wishart couldn't help the team outlast Michigan in a rematch of the 1952 championship. Eddie MacDonald (ice Hockey)
Edward 'Eddie' MacDonald is a Canadian retired ice hockey goaltender who was a two-time All-American for Clarkson, and was in net for every game of their undefeated season in 1955–56. Career MacDonald was one of several Canadian players to travel south to play at Clarkson College of Technology for Bill Harrison. After a year with the freshman team, MacDonald joined the varsity squad just in time for the best season in program history. While the offense dominated the competition, scoring nearly seven and a half goals per game, MacDonald backstopped the team to an undefeated record, allowing just 58 goals in the 23 games. The unblemished mark, the first for qualifying NCAA competition, earned Clarkson a bid to the 1956 NCAA Tournament. In ice hockey, the goaltender (commonly referred to as the goalie) is the player responsible for preventing the hockey puck from entering their team's net, thus preventing the opposing team from scoring. Jack McCartan
John William McCartan (born August 5, 1935) is a retired goaltender for the gold medal-winning 1960 United States ice hockey team. He is also a member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame, inducted in 1983. McCartan was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He was a college standout at the University of Minnesota from 1955 to 1958. McCartan also played baseball at Minnesota. McCartan was named First Team All-America after the 1957–1958 season. He played for the bronze medal-winning US team in baseball at the 1959 Pan American Games. After graduating, he joined the U.S. Army. While in the army, he joined the United States Olympic hockey team. His heroics helped the U.S. team defeat Canada, the Soviet Union, and Czechoslovakia and win the gold medal at Squaw Valley. The Division I AHCA All-American Teams are an annual honor bestowed by the American Hockey Coaches Association to the college hockey players judged to be the top performers in their division. Each team is composed of at least one goaltender, two defensemen and three forwards on ice hockey programs. At least one all-star team has been named by the since the start of NCAA tournament play in 1947–48 after the conclusion of either the regular season or the conference tournaments.
