1955 VFL Season
The 1955 VFL season was the 59th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 16 April until 17 September, and comprised an 18-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Melbourne Football Club for the seventh time, after it defeated by 28 points in the 1955 VFL Grand Final. Background In 1955, the VFL competition consisted of twelve teams of 18 on-the-field players each, plus two substitute players, known as the 19th man and the 20th man. A player could be substituted for any reason; however, once substituted, a player could not return to the field of play under any circumstances. Noel Rayson

Colin Vance
Colin Vance (10 October 1929 – 16 August 2018) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). A full forward, Vance surprised onlookers in his debut in Round 1, 1955 when he attempted his first set shot with a place kick, which had long disappeared from the game; the kick was well wide of the goals. Tony Ongarello
Tony Ongarello (22 December 1932 – 18 July 2022) was an Australian rules footballer of Italian heritage who played with Fitzroy in the VFL from 1952 to 1960. He played most of his career at full-forward. Ongarello is believed to be the last player in the VFL/AFL to have scored a goal from a place kick, scoring two goals from the kicks late in Fitzroy's narrow loss to Geelong in 1955 at Brunswick Street Oval. He was also the last player to attempt a place kick. Ongarello reportedly switched to the place kicks after missing several consecutive set shots from punt kicks in the game. Fitzroy Football Club
The Fitzroy Football Club is an Australian rules football club currently competing in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Formed in 1883 to represent the inner-Melbourne municipality of City of Fitzroy, Fitzroy, the club is based at the Brunswick Street Oval, W. T. 50-metre Penalty
In the sport of Australian rules football, the 50-metre penalty is an additional penalty applied by umpires for an infractions after a free kick or mark has already been paid. The 50-metre penalty is used in many senior competitions, including the Australian Football League. The laws of the game also allow leagues to use a 25-metre penalty in place of a 50-metre penalty; examples of leagues which do this include the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA), Australian Football International Cup and the Australian Amateur Football Council.
