Southern States Conference
The Southern States Conference (SSC) was an affiliate of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics that included member institutions in the U.S. states of Alabama, Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia, Mississippi, and Florida. The league existed from 1938 to 1997. History The league was established in December 1938 as the Alabama Intercollegiate Conference (AIC), comprising schools from just that state. Burgess–Snow Field at JSU Stadium is a 24,000-seat multi-purpose stadium in Jacksonville, Alabama. It opened in 1947 and is home to the Jacksonville State Gamecocks football team. It was also home to the Jacksonville High School Golden Eagles football team until 2004, when they moved to a new stadium on the high school campus. Tom Braly Municipal Stadium is a 14,215-seat stadium in Florence, Alabama. It is primarily used for American football, and is the home field of the University of North Alabama Lions and the Florence High School Falcons. Phillips Field was a medium-sized stadium (maximum capacity approximately 20,000) located on the west bank of the Hillsborough River across from downtown Tampa, immediately adjacent to the University of Tampa. It opened on October 4, 1937, and served as the home for the University of Tampa's football team from 1937 to 1967. The facility was named for local businessman I. W. Phillips, who donated the land to the school so that the Spartans would not have to share nearby Plant Field, which was often unavailable due to its use for many different sports and community events. Battle For The Ol' School Bell
The Battle for the Ol' School Bell was an rivalry between the Troy State Trojans (now the Troy Trojans) and the Jacksonville State Gamecocks when the two schools started playing together in Division II. The series continued as the Trojans moved to the FCS, with the Gamecocks moving to the FCS soon after. The series came to a halt when Troy moved to what is now the FBS. However, with Jacksonville State moving to the FBS and Conference USA in 2023, the rivalry may be renewed again in the near future. The idea for a school bell trophy stemmed from the two schools' common origins as teachers' colleges. History The two teams first met in 1924 in Jacksonville, Alabama. Jacksonville is a city in Calhoun County, Alabama, United States. As of the 2010 census the population was 12,548, which is a 49% increase since 2000.
