The 1953–54 season was the 61st season in Liverpool F.C.'s existence, and would be their last season in the First Division for eight years after they finished bottom of the table. This relegation broke a streak of forty-nine consecutive seasons in the top flight. It remains the last time that Liverpool have been relegated from the top division. Brian Jackson (footballer Born 1933)
Brian Jackson (1 April 1933 – 14 February 2020) was an English professional Association football, footballer of the 1950s. He scored 53 goals in 409 league and cup appearances in a 14-year career in the English Football League, Football League. An Midfielder, outside-right, he moved from Leyton Orient F.C., Leyton Orient to Liverpool F.C., Liverpool for £6,500 in November 1951. After playing seven years at Anfield, he was sold on to Port Vale F.C., Port Vale for £1,700 in July 1958. Joe Maloney
Joseph John Maloney (26 January 1934 – 17 October 2006) was an English footballer. A half-back, he had an 11-year career in the English Football League, making 289 league and cup appearances. He graduated from a youth player at Liverpool to sign professional forms with the club in January 1951. He signed with Shrewsbury Town three years later, and helped the "Shrews" to win promotion out of the Fourth Division in 1958–59. He transferred to Port Vale in June 1961, before moving on to Crewe Alexandra just two months later. He helped the "Railwaymen" to win promotion out of the Fourth Division in 1962–63, before he joined non-league outfit Winsford United. Billy Liddell
William Beveridge Liddell (10 January 1922 – 3 July 2001) was a Scottish footballer, who played his entire professional career with Liverpool. He signed with the club as a teenager in 1938 and retired in 1961, having scored 228 goals in 534 appearances (placing Liddell fourth and 12th in the respective club rankings as of June 2022). He was Liverpool's leading goalscorer in the league in eight out of nine seasons from 1949–50 to 1957–58,Keith, John (2005), pp. 302–5 and surpassed Elisha Scott's club record for most league appearances in 1957. Alan A'Court
Alan A'Court (30 September 1934 – 14 December 2009) was an English footballer who mostly played for Liverpool. He gained five caps for England and represented the nation at the 1958 FIFA World Cup. Playing career Born in Rainhill, Lancashire, England, A'Court was a winger who started out at Prescot Cables as an amateur before he was signed by Reds manager Don Welsh. A'Court made his debut in a league match at Ayresome Park on 7 February 1953, a game that saw Liverpool take both the points from a 3–2 win. Geoff Twentyman
Geoffrey Twentyman (19 January 1930 – 16 February 2004) was an English footballer who is mainly remembered for his links with Liverpool Football Club as both a player and as chief scout. Player Born in Brampton, Cumberland, the left-half played for Swift Rovers as an amateur and Carlisle United. Twentyman stood and was a strong, robust player who made his name at Carlisle as a centre-back having been switched there by Bill Shankly during his spell as Manager of the Brunton Park club. He was spotted by Don Welsh who signed him for Liverpool in December 1953 for £10,000, he made his debut the same month on the 19th in a league match against arch rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford. Phil Taylor (footballer, Born 1917)
Philip Henry Taylor (18 September 1917 – 1 December 2012) was an English footballer who played for and managed Liverpool. Player Taylor played for his hometown club Bristol Rovers as an apprentice (in 21 league matches, scoring twice) before he was signed by Liverpool manager George Patterson for £5000 plus Ted Hartill in March 1936, he made his debut on the 28th of the same month in a league game at the Baseball Ground, Liverpool shared the points with Derby County in a 2–2 draw with Taylor scoring a late equaliser, his first goal for the club. Taylor joined Liverpool as a young inside-forward with a lot of potential, but was reverted by George Kay to wing-half in which position he developed into a stylish, composed defender. Eddie Spicer
Edwin "Eddie" "Ted" Spicer (20 September 1922 – 25 December 2004) was a professional English footballer who played for Liverpool. His parents were George Stephen Spicer (1894-1956) and Ethel Anne Warren (1900-1981). He was married to Norma Anne Roberts (1926-2002). They were married in March 1946 in Wrexham and they had two children. Career Born in Liverpool, England, the 17-year-old Spicer signed professional forms for Liverpool in October 1939 after impressing manager George Kay. Like so many professional players, Spicer's career was interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War, due to this Eddie's 'official' debut was seven years after he first signed. Bob Paisley
Robert Paisley OBE (23 January 1919 – 14 February 1996) was an English professional football manager and player who played as a wing-half. He spent almost 50 years with Liverpool and is regarded, due to his achievements with the club, as one of the greatest managers of all time. Reluctantly taking the job in 1974, he built on the foundations laid by his predecessor Bill Shankly. Paisley is the first of three managers to have won the European Cup three times. Ronnie Moran
Ronald Moran (28 February 1934 – 22 March 2017) was a Liverpool F.C., Liverpool captain and coach who twice served as caretaker manager in the early 1990s. Having spent his entire playing career at the club, he then became a member of the Boot Room coaching staff with Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan and Reuben Bennett, and was the club's longest-serving employee when he retired in 1998.
