During the Parade of Nations section of the 1952 Summer Olympics opening ceremony, athletes from each country participating in the Olympics paraded into the arena. The Parade of Nations was organized according to the Finnish name of the country. Greece led the parade followed by the Netherlands Antilles. Other countries marched by following the Finnish alphabet, except the host country, Finland, which marched last. The 1952 Summer Olympics ( fi, Kesäolympialaiset 1952; sv, Olympiska sommarspelen 1952), officially known as the Games of the XV Olympiad ( fi, XV olympiadin kisat; sv, Den XV olympiadens spel) and commonly known as Helsinki 1952 ( sv, Helsingfors 1952), were an international multi-sport event held from 19 July to 3 August 1952 in Helsinki, Finland. After Japan declared in 1938 that it would be unable to host 1940 Olympics in Tokyo due to the ongoing Second Sino-Japanese War, Helsinki had been selected to host the 1940 Summer Olympics, which were then cancelled due to World War II. Tokyo eventually hosted the games in 1964. Helsinki is the northernmost city at which a summer Olympic Games have been held. Simon De Wit (rower)
Simon de Wit (24 August 1912 – 2 March 1976) was a Dutch rower and the chief executive of the supermarket chain Simon de Wit. De Wit was born in 1912 in Zaandam. His grandfather, also Simon de Wit, was the founder of the supermarket chain Simon de Wit. His father, Maarten de Wit, represented the Netherlands at the 1928 Summer Olympics in sailing. De Wit competed at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin with the men's coxed four where they came fourth. The same team also competed as a coxed four, with Gerard Hallie as coxswain, and they were eliminated in round one. Four of the five coxed four members remained together and won silver at the 1937 European Rowing Championships in Amsterdam. Doroteo Guamuch Flores, also called Mateo Flores (February 11, 1922 – August 11, 2011), was a Guatemalan long-distance runner who won several international events, including the Boston Marathon in 1952. Career Guamuch was born in Cotió, Mixco, a city near Guatemala City. During his early athletic career, Guamuch worked in as a low-paid laborer in a textile factory. He would wake at 4:00 am to run for two hours, and run an additional two hours after returning from work at 6:00 pm. Guamuch's career spanned from 1941 to 1957; prior to winning the 1952 Boston Marathon, he was the winner of multiple international races, notably the marathon at the 1946 Barranquilla Games, the half marathon at the 1950 Central American and Caribbean Games in Guatemala, and the marathon at the 1955 Pan American Games in Mexico City.
