1952 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament
The 1952 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was the culmination of the 1951–52 NCAA men's ice hockey season, the 5th such tournament in NCAA history. It was held between March 13 and 15, 1952, and concluded with Michigan defeating Colorado College 4-1. All games were played at the Broadmoor Ice Palace in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This was the first tournament to include teams that played in a conference. The MCHL had been created before the start of the season and through both of the conference representatives had appeared in the tournament previously both were independent. The Tri-State League also sent its first representative to the tournament after the conference began play the year before. Broadmoor World Arena
The Broadmoor World Arena was a skating rink and hockey arena located at The Broadmoor Resort & Spa in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Originally an outdoor equestrian center and riding academy, the building was enclosed and converted into an ice arena which opened in January 1938. It was the original home of the Colorado College Tigers hockey team, as well as the Broadmoor Skating Club, a major force in the figure skating community. The building served as the first home of the NCAA Hockey Championships, hosting the first ten Final Fours (1948–1957) and once more, in 1969. The arena served as host to the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships in 1962. It also hosted the World Figure Skating Championships five times between 1957 and 1975. John McKennell
John McKennell was a Canadian ice hockey Right wing and coach who played for Michigan in the early 1950s, winning three consecutive National Championships. Career McKennell played several years of junior hockey in the Toronto area, finishing with the Toronto Marlboros before joining Vic Heyliger's team at the University of Michigan. McKennell was an instant hit with the Wolverines, helping the team reach the 1951 NCAA Tournament after scoring 50+ points in 25 games for which he was named as an AHCA First Team All-American. McKennell scored three goals and added an assist in the two tournament games to help Michigan capture their second national championship. Despite high hopes, McKennell's scoring diminished significantly in his second season with the team, he only managed 13 goals and 32 points in 24 games, though the Wolverines did just manage to earn the second western seed to return to the tournament. Omer Brandt
Omer Brandt (1926-2019) was a Canadian ice hockey forward who played for Colorado College in the 1950s. Career Brandt earned a college scholarship through his ability on the ice and began attending Colorado College in 1949. While he was with the freshman team, CC won its first National Championship. When Brandt joined the varsity squad the following year, he became an instant hit on offense, finishing as one of the top scorers in the nation with 59 points in 25 games. Brant helped CC return to the national tournament but the defense faltered and the Tigers allowed 15 goals in 2 games, finishing 4th. Brandt nearly repeated his performance in his junior season, finishing with 54 points in 25 games, and earned recognition on the All- MCHL First Team and was an AHCA Second Team All-American. Willard Ikola
Willard John Ikola (born July 28, 1932) is an American retired ice hockey player and high school boys' hockey coach. Born in Eveleth, Minnesota, a powerhouse in hockey (owning seven state high school championships, including the very first Minnesota state hockey tournament in 1945, and producing six members of US Olympic hockey teams) he began playing hockey as a young boy, eventually going on to play in the 1956 Winter Olympics and coaching high school for over 30 years. Early life Willard Ikola was born in Eveleth, a small town in northern Minnesota that had one of the states most respected youth hockey programs. Alexander Douglas MacLellan (April 30, 1930 – March 18, 2022) was a Canadian ice hockey defenceman who won three consecutive national championships with Michigan. Career Hailing from Montreal, MacLellan was one of a slew of Canadians who played for Vic Heyliger on his powerhouse Michigan teams in the 1950s. After a year on the freshman team, MacLellan joined the varsity squad for the 1950–51 season and the team didn't miss a beat; the Wolverines finished the regular season with a record of 20–4–1 and received the top western seed. Brian McFarlane (born August 10, 1931) is a Canadian television sportscaster and author. He is also the Honorary President of the Society for International Hockey Research. He is the son of writer Leslie McFarlane. He is best known as a broadcaster on Hockey Night In Canada and as an author of hockey books. Biography Early life and career Brian McFarlane was raised in Whitby and Ottawa Ontario. He attended St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, on a hockey scholarship, graduating in 1955. In his four years he scored 101 goals for the Skating Saints, which remains a St. Lawrence record. On three occasions, he scored five goals in a game, a school record shared with several others. McFarlane was honoured as an All-American in 1952.
