1950 Gibraltar General Election
General elections were held in Gibraltar on 8 November 1950. The Association for the Advancement of Civil Rights emerged as the largest party in the new legislature, winning three of the five elected seats. The ''Gibraltar Chronicle'' is a national newspaper published in Gibraltar since 1801. It became a daily in 1821. It is Gibraltar's oldest established daily newspaper and the world's second oldest English language newspaper to have been in print continuously. Its editorial offices are at Watergate House, and the print works are in the New Harbours industrial estate. History The ''Gibraltar Chronicle'' was born in direct relationship with the garrison. Casualty lists and news were slow in the 18th century and when five regiments from the Garrison of Gibraltar were promptly shipped to Egypt in 1801, the news was posted on a notice board in the Gibraltar Garrison Library. It was soon decided that the information should be made available to the public. A bulletin headed, "Continuation of the INTELLIGENCE FROM EGYPT received by His Majesty's ship Flora in three weeks from Alexandria," was printed at the Garrison Library press on 4 May 1801 and sold by H. and T. Tommy Finlayson
Thomas James Finlayson MBE, commonly known as Tommy Finlayson (Gibraltar, 1 May 1938), is a Gibraltarian historian. He is also a former cricketer and archivist of the Gibraltar Archives. He is the eldest brother of Clive Finlayson, the director of the Gibraltar Museum. Early life Tommy Finlayson was born in Gibraltar on 1 May 1938. His family, of Scottish descent, have been established on The Rock since the early 19th century. When World War II broke out he was evacuated, as was most of the civilian population of Gibraltar, with his family across the strait to French Morocco. Only a few weeks later, following the defeat of France and the armistice with Germany, the French authorities expelled the evacuees which the War Office then decided to transfer to London via Gibraltar. Finlayson and his family were taken to London aboard the ''Athlone Castle'' in July 1940. Abraham William Serfaty CBE, JP, was a Gibraltarian architect and politician. Biography Born in 1910, Abraham William Serfaty was a draughtsman of the Gibraltar City Council when he received an invitation to work for ''Messrs Pearson Mechanical and Civil Engineers'' in the UK. While in England, he completed his studies in civil engineering. Returning to the Rock, Serfaty worked as an architect and later joined the AACR of Sir Joshua Hassan. He ran for the Legislative Council in 1950 but was not elected. However, he became part of the Executive Council, initially as an "unofficial member". In the Legislative Council elections of 1956, he was one of four AACR members elected, the others being Joshua Hassan, Albert Risso, and J. E. Alcantara. He served at first as Member or Minister for Medical Services, then as Minister for Tourism, and finally as Minister for Economic Development in successive AACR Governments until his retirement in 1984. Albert J. Risso, GMH was a Gibraltarian trade unionist and politician. He was the first president of the Association for the Advancement of Civil Rights (AACR) in Gibraltar.Constantine, p. 346 Career Albert Risso was one of the first political activists in the British territory of Gibraltar. at a very young age, he was one of the campaigners for the involvement of the Gibraltarian civilian population (and especially its working class) in governing the colony. Gibraltar Legislative Council
The Gibraltar Legislative Council was the legislature of Gibraltar created in 1950 and sat until the creation of the Gibraltar House of Assembly in 1969. History Prior to 1950, the Governor-in-Council retained the legislative power in the then Crown colony. The creation of the legislature gave some limited autonomy, with seven members of the Legislative Council being elected from the 1950s on. The legislature sat at the Legislative Council Building at John Mackintosh Square. Elections Elections were held every three years. In an election held on 19 September 1956, ten candidates contested the seven elected seats. There was a turnout of 58.2 per cent, and the winners were Joshua Hassan, Abraham Serfaty, J. E.
