1949–50 Indiana State Sycamores Men's Basketball Team
The 1949–50 Indiana State Sycamores men's basketball season is considered one of the greatest in the school's history. The Sycamore's were led by NAIB All-American Lenny Len Rzeszewski. He led them to the national title game versus East Central Oklahoma and ended the season as the National Champion with a record of 27–8. This season was Indiana State's 4th NAIA Final Four, its 3rd National Title game and its 1st National Championship. Regular season During the 1949–50 season, Indiana State finished the regular season 20–8, 7–2 in the Indiana Intercollegiate Conference. They won on average by over 10 points per game, dropping a hard fought battle to the national ranked (# 2) Duquesne Dukes on the road. 1950 NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1950 NAIA basketball tournament was held in March at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri. The 13th annual NAIA basketball tournament featured 32 teams playing in a single-elimination format. The championship game featured Indiana State and East Central State. It was the first time these two teams had met in the tournament history. The Sycamores defeated the Tigers, 61-57. This would be Indiana State's highest finish in their 12 career appearances in the NAIA tournament. Winning the championship puts them in a unique group to place 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Also Indiana State finally gets a win after 2 times as runner-up. Uniquely, Indiana State has finished as the National Runner-up in the NAIA (1946 and 1948), the NCAA Division I (1979) and the NCAA Division II (1968) tournaments. Lenny Rzeszewski
Clemens L. "Lenny" Rzeszewski (November 6, 1923 – November 7, 2013) was an American college basketball player and, later, a high school coach. He also coached Baseball at South Bend LaSalle and in 1984 they were rated number 1 going into sectional play. High school career Lenny Rzeszewski attended South Bend Central High School in South Bend, Indiana where he played for John Wooden. In 1941, his senior year, Rzeszewski was member of the school team that went 26–3, and would reach the semistate championship game, where they fell to Gary Froebel High School by one point. College career After high school, Lenny attended Indiana State University, located in Terre Haute, Indiana. He played basketball under head coach John Wooden and John Longfellow; he finished his career with 1,175 points. Indiana Intercollegiate Conference
The Indiana Intercollegiate Conference (IIC) was a college athletic conference in the United States from 1922 to 1950. It consisted of schools in Indiana. The charter members of the conference were Indiana State University, Butler University, DePauw University, Earlham College, Franklin, Hanover College and Rose-Hulman. The following year, University of Indianapolis and Ball State University joined. By the late 1940s, virtually every Indiana college; private or public was a member. The notable exceptions were Purdue University, Indiana University and the University of Notre Dame; it was at this time that the Conference splintered into two, the Indiana Collegiate Conference made up of the larger schools and the Hoosier College Conference, comprising the smaller schools. Duquesne Dukes
The Duquesne Dukes are the athletic teams of Duquesne University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Dukes compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association as members of the Atlantic 10 Conference. Football and bowling, however, compete in the Northeast Conference. Sports sponsored A member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, Duquesne University sponsors teams in six men's and eleven women's NCAA sanctioned sports. John Longfellow
John Landis Longfellow (1901-1977) was an American basketball coach and player. He is best known as National Title winning-head men's basketball coach at Indiana State University as well as leading the USA National Team to a gold medal in the 1951 Pan-Am Games. Born in Warsaw, Indiana, Longfellow was an notable Indiana high school coach for the Leesburg Blue Blazers, the Nappanee Bulldogs and the Hartford City Airedales. However, his greatest success came with the Elkhart Blazers. All told, his teams won over 375 games and 24 state tourney titles in 19 years of coaching; two of his best players were the Brothers Patanelli, Matt Patanelli and Joe Patanelli.
