1949–50 Chicago Black Hawks Season
The 1949–50 Chicago Black Hawks season was the team's 24th season in the National Hockey League. The Black Hawks finished in sixth, out of the playoffs. Off-season In goal, the Black Hawks acquired long-time Boston Bruins goaltender Frank Brimsek. Brimsek would play in all 70 games for the Hawks, winning 22 of them, earning five shutouts along the way, and posting a 3.49 GAA. Regular season The Black Hawks had finished in fifth place in 1948–49, failing to qualify for the playoffs for the third year in a row. Prior to the season, the NHL announced that they would be adding ten games to the regular season schedule, raising it from 60 games to 70. Despite the extra games added, the Black Hawks would only win one more game than the previous season, and finish in last place in the NHL with 54 points, 13 behind the New York Rangers for the final playoff spot, missing the playoffs for the fourth straight season. Bill Tobin (ice Hockey)
William John Tobin (May 20, 1895 – May 8, 1963) was a Canadian ice hockey player, executive and head coach. He was a senior executive with the Chicago Black Hawks for the team's first 36 years of existence, also serving as coach for parts of two seasons. From 1946 to 1950, he was also the team's principal owner. Personal information Tobin was born in Ottawa, Ontario. Tobin died in Chicago's Mercy Hospital of emphysema. He was survived by his wife Muriel, son Donald W. and daughter Mrs. Elaine Bovaird, all of Chicago, and two sisters, Mrs. Maude Sunderland and Mrs. Gertrude Ashe, both of Ottawa. Ice hockey career Tobin was a goaltender for several senior hockey teams of the Ottawa City Hockey League before signing with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Big-4 League in Alberta. Bert Olmstead
Murray Albert Olmstead (September 4, 1926 – November 16, 2015) was a Canadian professional ice hockey left winger who played for the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Black Hawks and Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League (NHL). Olmstead began his career with the Black Hawks in 1949. In December 1950, he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens via Detroit. Olmstead had his best statistical years playing for Montreal, leading the league in assists in 1954–55 with 48, and setting a league record for assists with 56 the following season. During this time he frequently played on Montreal's top line with Jean Beliveau and Bernie Geoffrion. Olmstead was claimed in an Intra-League Draft by Toronto Maple Leafs in 1958, and played there until his retirement in 1962. The 1948–49 NHL season was the 32nd season of the National Hockey League. In a rematch of the previous season, Toronto defeated Detroit in the Stanley Cup final to win the championship.
