1947 WANFL Season
The 1947 WANFL season was the 63rd season of senior football in Perth, Western Australia. With the background of war completely removed, 1947 saw the WANFL begin a golden age of growth dominated by the two Fremantle clubs, West Perth and Perth, who made the league for the following nine seasons a ''de facto'' hierarchy led by South Fremantle and West Perth, who respectively won 128 and 121 of their 159 home-and-away matches between 1947 and 1954. Bernie Naylor
Bernard George Andrew Naylor (19 April 1923 – 26 September 1993) was an Australian rules footballer who was one of the most successful full-forwards in the history of the West Australian Football League. In sports, a dynasty is a team or individual that dominates their sport or league for an extended length of time. Some leagues usually maintain official lists of dynasties, often as part of a hall of fame, but in many cases, whether a team or individual has achieved a dynasty is subjective. Fred Buttsworth
Frederick James Buttsworth (29 May 1927 – 12 May 2021) was an Australian rules footballer who played for West Perth in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) and briefly for Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was the younger brother of footballer Wally Buttsworth. Buttsworth started his career with West Perth during the Second World War and was their best and fairest winner in 1944. He joined the navy in 1945 and was posted in Melbourne which gave him a chance to play in the VFL with Essendon, playing eight games and kicking nine goals. In 1946 he returned to West Perth and established himself as one of the best centre half backs in the competition. He was a member of premiership sides in 1949 and again in 1951 when he won another best and fairest as well as a Sandover Medal. Marcel Hilsz
Marcel Louis 'Nugget' Hilsz (9 February 1921 – 15 May 1997) was an Australian rules footballer who played for St Kilda in the VFL and Perth in the WAFL. Hilsz began at Perth in 1938 but saw his early career interrupted by the Second World War. While on war service in Victoria he spent some time with St Kilda and played eight VFL games in 1942. He played most of his football as a hard running defender but could also play forward, topping Perth's goal kicking list with 65 goals in 1951. The St Kilda Football Club, nicknamed the Saints, is a professional Australian rules football club based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Victoria. Merv McIntosh
Mervyn Frederick "Merv" McIntosh (25 November 1922 – 3 May 2010) was an Australian rules footballer in the (then) West Australian Football League, West Australian National Football League (WANFL). A brilliant ruckman (Australian rules football position), ruckman, he was awarded the Sandover Medal as the fairest and best player in the league three times while playing with the Perth Football Club. Playing career Merv McIntosh played 217 games for Perth (severely curtailed by the World War II years), plus 20 state games for Western Australia in the period 1939 to 1955. In a richly rewarded career he won three Sandover Medals, three Simpson Medals and a Tassie Medal (as the best player at the 1953 Adelaide Carnival, 1953 Adelaide National Football Carnival). 1947 Hobart Carnival
The 1947 Hobart Carnival was the tenth edition of the Australian National Football Carnival, an Australian rules football interstate competition. It was held from the July 30 to August 9 and was the second time (first being 1924) to be held in Hobart with North Hobart Oval once again being the host stadium throughout the carnival. The carnival was expanded to seven teams from the three that played in the previous edition which meant for the first time since 1908, the competition saw two sections. Section A being South Australia, VFL and Western Australia while Tasmania, New South Wales, Queensland and Canberra took part in Section B. Western Australia caused an upset with a 4-point win over the VFL, the first time the Victorians had lost at a carnival since 1921. The VFL however claimed the Championship on percentage after easily accounting for South Australia by 76 points. Warren Ralph
Warren James Ralph (born 25 February 1959) is a former Australian rules footballer who played during the 1980s with great success as a full-forward for Claremont in the WAFL and with lesser success in the VFL and SANFL. Ralph began his career at Floreat Park in the WA Amateur Football League. He then played two seasons in the country with Dalwallinu before returning to Floreat, where he also had a considerable reputation in the local cricket competition as a fast bowler before dedicating himself solely to football in 1979. He debuted for Claremont's league team in 1980 and showed himself to be an extremely potent full-forward in dry conditions: against Perth and Subiaco he kicked totals of 11.6 (72). His performance for the Tigers in wet conditions, against South Fremantle and East Fremantle, suggested that Ralph had limitations.
