Helms Athletic Foundation
The Helms Athletic Foundation, founded in 1936, was a Los Angeles-based organization dedicated to the promotion of athletics and sportsmanship. Paul H. Helms was the organization's founder and benefactor, funding the foundation via his ownership of Helms Bakery. Bill Schroeder founded the organization with Helms and served as its managing director. The men were united in a love of amateur athletic competition. The organization became well known for presenting awards and trophies for local, national, and international competition, naming the Southern California Player of the Month and Year, national championships in college basketball and college football, Rose Bowl Player of the Game, Coach of the Year, and other such awards for athletic achievement. Jim Homer
James Powell Homer (December 5, 1921 – October 15, 1992) was an American basketball player and coach. He played two seasons for the Syracuse Nationals of the American National Basketball League. He was an All-American college player at the University of Alabama and coached at the college level following his playing career. Homer went to Alabama from Columbus High School in Columbus, Georgia. In his junior season of 1942–43, Homer finished second in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) scoring race to Tulane’s Bob Duffy. After serving for three years with the United States Navy in World War II, in Homer returned to the Tide for the 1946–47 season. For the season, Homer set a new SEC scoring record (since broken) with 268 points. Billy Gabor
William A. Gabor (May 13, 1922 – June 4, 2019) was an American professional basketball player. A 5'11" guard/ forward known as "Billy the Bullet", Gabor played collegiately at Syracuse University in the 1940s. He averaged 12.1 points per game during his freshman year before joining the United States Army Air Corps in 1943. He returned to Syracuse in 1945 and played three more seasons, finishing with a (then) team-record 1,344 career points. Gabor's jersey was retired by Syracuse University on March 1, 2009. Gabor spent his professional career with the Syracuse Nationals of the National Basketball League and later the National Basketball Association. He played with Syracuse until injuries forced him into retirement in 1955. In his NBA career, Gabor averaged 9.8 points per game and logged one NBA All-Star Game appearance. Lew Beck (basketball)
Lewis William Beck Jr. (April 19, 1922 – April 3, 1970) was an All-American college basketball player who was captain of the United States Olympic basketball team that won the Gold medal at the 1948 Summer Olympics. Before he began playing for Oregon State University, he suffered a leg injury in World War II. Lew died of cancer in April 1970, his funeral was on April 7, 1970 in Portland, Oregon. The Oregon State University basketball team honored him by including among its annual awards the Lew Beck Memorial Award, the award given to the player who is deemed to be the team's most outstanding newcomer.
