1946–47 Colchester United F.C. Season
The 1946–47 season was Colchester United's fifth season in their history and their fifth in the Southern League. Alongside competing in the Southern League, the club also participated in the FA Cup and Southern League Cup. New manager Ted Fenton began to assemble a team of professionals following the reliance on guest players during the 1945–46 season, as the club finished 8th in the league. They reached the first round of the FA Cup, but were defeated by Football League side Reading. They were also Southern League Cup semi-finalists, defeated at Priestfield Stadium by Gillingham. Peter Chiswick
Peter John Henry Chiswick (19 September 1929 – August 1962) was an English professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper in the Football League for West Ham United and Gillingham. Chiswick initially signed amateur terms with Colchester United in 1946, while also registering for West Ham's colts team. His performances during the 1946–47 season saw West Ham sign Chiswick professionally, but he had to wait until 1954 to have his first taste of first-team football. After 19 league appearances, Chiswick left the club in 1956 to join Gillingham. Here, he made 14 appearances, and later turned out for Margate and Barking. Digger Kettle
Albert Henry "Digger" Kettle (3 June 1922 – 1 March 1999) was an English footballer who played for Colchester United. Career Born in Colchester, Kettle served in the Royal Air Force in Rhodesia and Italy during World War II. After playing for Stanway Rovers, Chapel and Wakes Colne and Arclight Sports as a teenager, he signed for Colchester United in 1946. Remaining part-time, he played as a full-back for Colchester in the Southern League and Football League whilst continuing to work for Woods, a fan manufacturer in Colchester. After 23 appearances in the Football League, Kettle signed for Sudbury Town in 1955. After two seasons with Sudbury he signed for Woods Athletic, where he ended his playing career. He died in 1999. Bill Bower (footballer)
Ronald William Charles Bower (17 November 1911 – December 1998) was a Welsh professional footballer who played as a right-back in the Football League for New Brighton and Bolton Wanderers. Bower began his career as a forward, a position in which he played 24 Football League games for New Brighton between 1932 and 1934. He then joined non-League side South Liverpool, before continuing in the Football League with Bolton Wanderers, where he made three appearances. He then moved south to Millwall in the Southern League. The onset of World War II limited the number of games that Bower could play, but he did make guest appearances for Southend United, New Brighton and Aldershot. He joined Colchester United as a guest in 1945, but signed professional terms in November 1945, remaining with the club until 1949 and making 55 Southern League appearances. Harry Wright (footballer, Born 1909)
Harold Edward Wright (3 June 1909 – April 1994) was an English professional footballer and manager who played as a goalkeeper in the Football League for Charlton Athletic, Aldershot, and Derby County, and managed the India national team between 1963 and 1964. Wright began his playing career with Harwich & Parkeston, but by 1932 he was on the books at Charlton, where he remained for three years. He spent time with Aldershot and then Derby County before the outbreak of World War II. He also appeared for Southern League sides Chelmsford City and Colchester United. He represented an England XI once in 1935 against an Anglo-Scot team in a friendly game for the King George V Jubilee Trust Fund. Wright took up a coaching role at Guildford City following his retirement in 1949, before holding similar positions at Walsall and Luton Town.
