A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Goulburn on 1 June 1946 because of the resignation of Jack Tully () to be appointed Agent-General for New South Wales in London. Dates Candidates * Ray Bladwell, the Country Party candidate, was a local grazier and wool broker. This was his first election campaign and he would unsuccessfully stand for Goulburn in 1947, 1956 and 1959. * Dick Hollis, the Liberal party candidate, was the Mayor of Goulburn and nephew of the former member Dr Leslie Hollis. * Laurie Tully, the Labor Party candidate, a son of the former member, was educated at St Patrick's College, Goulburn, former public servant, and barrister. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. Leslie Hollis (politician)
Leslie Thomas Hollis (23 May 1865 – 7 August 1898) was an Australian politician. He was born in Goulburn to Henry Hollis, who was superintendent of Goulburn Hospital, and Julia Regan. He attended school locally and became a student teacher for four years before studying medicine at the University of Sydney. He received a Bachelor of Medicine and a Master of Surgery, and from 1890 was house surgeon of Sydney Hospital. He practised in Goulburn from 1891. In 1891 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Goulburn. In 1893 he refused to sign the pledge for a binding Labor vote, and became associated with the Free Trade Free trade is a trade policy that does not restrict imports or exports. The Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch), also known as NSW Labor, is the New South Wales branch of the Australian Labor Party. The parliamentary leader is elected from and by the members of the party caucus, comprising all party members in the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. The party factions have a strong influence on the election of the leader. The leader's position is dependent on the continuing support of the caucus (and party factions) and the leader may be deposed by failing to win a vote of confidence of parliamentary members. Laurie Tully
Laurence John Tully (30 July 1917 – 27 June 1981) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1946 until 1965. He was a member of the Labor Party (ALP) . Tully was born in Sydney and was the son of Jack Tully the member for Goulburn in the Legislative Assembly between 1925 and 1946. He was educated at St Patrick's College, Goulburn and the law faculty of the University of Sydney. He was called to the bar in 1942. During World War Two, he served with the Royal Australian Air Force. After an unsuccessful campaign in the seat of Temora in 1944, Tully was elected to the parliament as the Labor member for Goulburn at the 1946 by-election caused by the resignation of his father. Goulburn is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is represented by Wendy Tuckerman of the Liberal Party. Goulburn is a regional electorate. It encompasses all of Goulburn Mulwaree Council, Yass Valley Council, Upper Lachlan Shire, the eastern part of Hilltops Council and a large part of Wingecarribee Shire.
