1945 British Columbia General Election
The 1945 British Columbia general election was the 21st general election in the Province of British Columbia, Canada. It was held to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. The election was called on August 31, 1945, and held on October 25, 1945. The new legislature met for the first time on February 21, 1946. A centre-right coalition was formed by the Liberal and Conservative parties in order to defeat the social democratic Co-operative Commonwealth Federation. Although the Coalition won fewer votes than the Liberal and Conservative parties won in total in the previous election, the Coalition still won over half of the votes, and was able to form a majority government. Social Credit Party Of British Columbia
The British Columbia Social Credit Party, whose members are known as Socreds, was the governing provincial political party of British Columbia, Canada, for all but three years between the 1952 provincial election and the 1991 election. For four decades, the party dominated the British Columbian political scene, with the only break occurring between the 1972 and 1975 elections when the British Columbia New Democratic Party governed. Although founded as part of the Canadian social credit movement, promoting social credit policies of monetary reform, the BC Social Credit Party later discarded the ideology and became a political vehicle for fiscal conservatives and later social conservatives in British Columbia. The party essentially collapsed within one term of its 1991 defeat. Atlin (electoral District)
Atlin was a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It made its first appearance on the hustings in the 10th provincial general election in 1903 and last appeared in the 34th provincial general election in 1986, after which it was merged with the Skeena riding and was succeeded by Bulkley Valley-Stikine. Demographics Political geography Always one of the province's largest ridings by area, it was always among the smallest in population, and is often cited as an example of a lack of proper representation-by-population in the BC political system. From the perspective of riding residents, who are spread out in a handful of small settlements from the Nass River to the Yukon border, a riding incorporating larger population centres was unfair to them. British Columbia New Democratic Party
The New Democratic Party of British Columbia (BC NDP) is a social-democratic provincial political party in British Columbia, Canada. As of 2017, it governs the province. It is the British Columbia provincial arm of the federal New Democratic Party (NDP). The party previously governed from 1972 to 1975 and from 1991 to 2001. Burnaby was a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia that first appeared on the hustings in the 1924 election. Demographics Political geography The riding was identical with the Municipality of Burnaby, other than areas near to New Westminster which were included in the New Westminster electoral district. At the time of the riding's creation much of Burnaby was still semi-rural and development was confined to the Kingsway corridor (then "Westminster Highway"), along Hastings Street and Broadway (near Lougheed Highway), and along the two mainlines of the British Columbia Electric Railway via Central Park and Burnaby Lake. Alberni (electoral District)
Alberni was a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It originally appeared in the 1890 election and then, after being merged into Cowichan-Alberni for the 1894 election, was renamed Alberni riding in the election of 1898. The riding lasted by that name until 1933 and 1937, when the name Alberni-Nanaimo was used. In 1941 the Alberni riding name was restored. After a redistribution, the area became part of the riding of Alberni-Qualicum. James Mowat
James Mowat (October 6, 1889 – October 26, 1962) was a Scottish-born merchant and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Alberni in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1941 to 1952 as a Liberal member of the coalition government. Thomas Dufferin "Duff" Pattullo (January 19, 1873 – March 30, 1956) was the 22nd premier of British Columbia from 1933 to 1941. Early life and early political career Born in Woodstock, Ontario, into a family of Scottish ancestry, Pattullo's early career was as a journalist with two newspapers in Ontario: the ''Woodstock Sentinel'' in the 1890s, and as editor of the ''Galt Reformer'' in 1896. He got a job as secretary to James Morrow Walsh, the commissioner of the Yukon, where he stayed until 1902. In 1908, he moved to Prince Rupert, British Columbia and soon became mayor. He was elected to the provincial legislature in the 1916 election, and was appointed minister of lands in the Liberal government. The Socialist Party of Canada (SPC) was a political party that existed from 1904 to 1925, led by E. T. Kingsley. It published the socialist newspaper ''Western Clarion''.
