Doby Bartling
McNeil "Doby" Bartling Jr. (June 1, 1913 – October 9, 1992) was an American football player and coach of football, basketball, and baseball. He served as head football coach at Vanderbilt University from 1944 to 1945 and at Millsaps College from 1946 to 1950, compiling a career college football record of 24–18–2. Bartling was also the head basketball coach at Millsaps from 1946 to 1951, tallying a mark of 25–63, and the head baseball coach at the school from 1947 to 1949, amassing a record of 15–31. He played football as a quarterback at the University of Mississippi. Bartling came to Vanderbilt in 1943 as an assistant coach after coaching at Meridian High School (Mississippi), Meridian High School in Meridian, Mississippi. Bartling was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1977. He died of heart failure, on October 9, 1992, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. 1944 College Football Season
The 1944 college football season was the 76th season of intercollegiate football in the United States. Competition included schools from the Big Ten Conference, the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC), the Southeastern Conference (SEC), the Big Six Conference, the Southern Conference, the Southwestern Conference, and numerous smaller conferences and independent programs. The season was played at the height of World War II, starting less than three months after the Normandy landings and as battles raged throughout Europe and the Pacific. As in 1943, the Associated Press poll included service teams, drawn from flight schools and training centers which were preparing men for fighting in the war. Half of the final top 20 teams were composed of service teams, in addition to the Army and Navy service academies. The Sewanee Tigers football team represents Sewanee: The University of the South in the sport of American football. The Tigers compete in NCAA Division III as members of the Southern Athletic Association. Three Sewanee Tigers are members of the College Football Hall of Fame: Henry Seibels, Henry D. Phillips, and Frank Juhan. History The Sewanee Tigers were pioneers in American intercollegiate athletics and possessed the Deep South's preeminent football program in the 1890s. Ellwood Wilson is considered the "founder of Sewanee football." Their 1899 football team had perhaps the best season in college football history, winning all 12 of their games, 11 by shutout, and outscoring their opponents 322-10. McGee Field/Harris Stadium (officially Benjamin Humphreys McGee Field at Eugene O. Harris Stadium) located in Sewanee, Tennessee is the home of the Sewanee Tigers football and lacrosse teams.
