Carroll Widdoes
Carroll Curtis Widdoes (December 3, 1903 – September 22, 1971) was an American football coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head coach at Ohio State University (1944–1945) and Ohio University (1949–1957), compiling a career record of 58 wins, 38 losses and 5 draws. Widdoes's 1944 Ohio State team went undefeated and was retroactively named national champion by the National Championship Foundation and the Sagarin Ratings. Early life Widdoes was the son of the Rev. and Mrs. Howard W. Widdoes. The Widdoes were missionaries to the Philippines for the United Brethren Church, a predecessor denomination of the United Methodist Church, and Carroll was born there in 1903. In their third year under head coach Ray Eliot, the Illini compiled a 5–3–1 record, were ranked #15 in the final AP Poll, and finished in sixth place in the Big Ten Conference. The team lost three games to teams ranked in the top 10 in the AP Poll: #9-ranked Notre Dame (7–13); #8-ranked Michigan (0–14); and #2-ranked Ohio State (12–26). William Charles Hackett (December 9, 1923 – June 2, 1995) was an American football guard at Ohio State University. He was a consensus All-American in 1944. After college, he became a doctor of veterinary medicine and played a part in the founding of the Cincinnati Bengals. Playing career Hackett attended Ohio State University, where he played for the Ohio State Buckeyes football team from 1942 to 1944 under coach Paul Brown and in 1945 under coach Carroll Widdoes. The 1945 Detroit Lions season was their 16th in the league. The Lions improved on their previous season's output of 6–3–1, winning seven games. Gene Fekete
Eugene H. Fekete (August 31, 1922 – April 28, 2011) was an American football fullback and linebacker who played for the Cleveland Browns for one season in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) before launching a coaching and education career. Fekete was from Findlay, Ohio, where he starred on several high school sports teams. He graduated and enrolled at Ohio State University in 1941. At Ohio State, he was part of a football team that won the school's first national championship in 1942. After serving in the U.S. Army for several years during World War II, Fekete returned to Ohio State to finish his education and played one year for the Browns, a new professional football team in the AAFC. His career cut short by a bad knee, Fekete went on to serve as an assistant football coach at Ohio State for 10 years. John Richard Rabbit Dugger (January 13, 1923 – February 23, 1988) was an American football player who played three seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round of the 1945 NFL Draft. Dugger played college football at Ohio State University and attended Canton McKinley High School in Canton, Ohio. The 1944 Michigan Wolverines football team represented the University of Michigan in the 1944 Big Ten Conference football season. Under seventh-year head coach Fritz Crisler, Michigan compiled a record of 8–2 (5–2 Big Ten Conference), outscored opponents 204 to 91, finished in second place in the Big Ten Conference, and was ranked #8 in the final AP Poll.
