1938–39 Long Island Blackbirds Men's Basketball Team
The 1938–39 Long Island Blackbirds men's basketball team represented Long Island University during the 1938–39 NCAA men's basketball season in the United States. The head coach was Clair Bee, coaching in his eighth season with the Blackbirds. The team finished the season with a 23–0 record and was retroactively named the national champion by the Helms Athletic Foundation and the Premo-Porretta Power Poll. They won the second-ever National Invitation Tournament (NIT) as well, going 3–0 in the tournament with a win over Loyola of Chicago in the championship game. Clair Bee
Clair Francis Bee (March 2, 1896 – May 20, 1983) was an American basketball coach who led the team at Long Island University in Brooklyn, New York to undefeated seasons in 1936 and 1939, as well as two National Invitation Tournament titles in 1939 and 1941. Biography Bee was born in Grafton, West Virginia to James Edward Bee (1871–1933) and Margaret Ann Skinner. Later, Bee was a graduate of Waynesburg University (then Waynesburg College) where he played football, baseball, and tennis. Bee's teams won 95 percent of their games from 1931 to 1951, including 43 in a row from 1935 to 1937. Bee holds the Division I NCAA record for highest winning percentage, winning 83% of the games he was head coach. Bee resigned in 1951 after several of his players were implicated in the CCNY Point Shaving Scandal. LIU shut down its athletic program shortly afterward. The New York Athletic Club is a private social club and athletic club in New York state. Founded in 1868, the club has approximately 8,600 members and two facilities: the City House, located at 180 Central Park South in Manhattan, and Travers Island, located in Westchester County. Membership in the club is by invitation only. The club offers many sports, including rowing, wrestling, boxing, judo, fencing, swimming, basketball, rugby union, soccer, tennis, handball, squash, snooker, lacrosse and water polo.
