1938 Stanley Cup Finals
The 1938 Stanley Cup Finals was a best-of-five series between the Chicago Black Hawks and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Chicago won the series 3–1 to win their second Stanley Cup. With their record of 14-25-9, they possess, to date, the lowest regular-season winning percentage of any championship team in the four major professional sports leagues, and are the only ones to do so with a losing record. 1937–38 Chicago Black Hawks Season
The 1937–38 Chicago Black Hawks season was the team's 12th season in the NHL, and they were coming off a horrible season in 1936–37, in which the club failed to qualify for the playoffs. In the off-season, the team would replace head coach Clem Loughlin with Bill Stewart. The Black Hawks would struggle again in 1937–38, finishing with 37 points with a 14–25–9 record, but managed to earn a playoff spot by finishing 2 points ahead of the Detroit Red Wings and clinch 3rd place in the American Division. They would score an NHL low 97 goals, while giving up the 2nd most goals in the league at 139. The Stanley Cup (french: La Coupe Stanley) is the championship trophy awarded annually to the National Hockey League (NHL) playoff champion. It is the oldest existing trophy to be awarded to a professional sports franchise in North America, and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) considers it to be one of the "most important championships available to the sport". The trophy was commissioned in 1892 as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup and is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor General of Canada, who donated it as an award to Canada's top-ranking amateur ice hockey club. The 1992 NBA Finals was the championship round of the 1991–92 NBA season, and the conclusion of the season's playoffs. The defending NBA champion and Eastern Conference champion Chicago Bulls took on the Western Conference champion Portland Trail Blazers for the title, with Chicago having home court advantage, as they had the best record in the NBA that season. Paul Goodman (ice Hockey)
Paul William Goodman (February 25, 1905 – October 1, 1959) was a Canadian ice hockey goaltender and politician who played three seasons in the NHL with the Chicago Black Hawks. Career During the 1938 Stanley Cup Finals, Mike Karakas, the regular Black Hawks goaltender, was injured and unable to play in game one. Chicago used substitution goalie Alfie Moore. The Black Hawks won the game 3–1 over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Toronto then refused to let Moore play the next game, but agreed to allow Goodman to play. Chicago lost 5–1 to Toronto. Karakas returned from injuries to win the next two games. Chicago became the first of only two teams (see 1949 Toronto) to win the Stanley Cup with a losing record. Frank Sellick Calder (November 17, 1877 – February 4, 1943) was a British-born Canadian ice hockey executive, journalist, and athlete. Calder was the first president of the National Hockey League (NHL), from 1917 until his death in 1943. He was the last president of the NHL's predecessor league, the National Hockey Association (NHA), and was instrumental in the transition from the NHA to the NHL, a transition made to expel a franchise owner. Alfie Moore
Alfred Ernest Moore (December 1, 1904 – June 29, 1979) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender. Moore played 16 seasons of professional ice hockey between 1925 and 1942, including 21 games in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Black Hawks, New York Americans and Detroit Red Wings between 1937 and 1940 Playing career During game one of the 1938 Stanley Cup Finals Moore replaced Mike Karakas in the Chicago Black Hawks net when replacement goaltender Paul Goodman did not arrive in Toronto on time. Mike Karakas
Michael George Karakas (November 13, 1910 – May 2, 1992) was an American professional ice hockey goaltender in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was the league's first American-born and -trained goaltender and the first player of Greek descent. Karakas played six full seasons and parts of two others with the Chicago Black Hawks and appeared in two Stanley Cup Finals, winning once. In 1938, he led Chicago, who had a .411 winning percentage in the regular season, to a second Stanley Cup, playing with a steel-toed boot on one foot in the last two games of the Finals after he had broken it in the last game of the Semi-finals.
