1935 Queensland State Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 11 May 1935 to elect the 62 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The Labor government of Premier William Forgan Smith was seeking a second term after having defeated the Country and Progressive National Party in the 1932 election. Labor received a significant swing and gained 13 seats. The election took place on new boundaries for the second election in a row. Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). Electoral District Of East Toowoomba
Electoral District of East Toowoomba was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. It was created in 1912 when the old seat of Drayton & Toowoomba split into East Toowoomba, Toowoomba and Drayton. East Toowoomba ceased to exist in 1950. In the 1960 redistribution, a seat of Toowoomba East (along with Toowoomba West) was created that lasted until 1972. When East Toowoomba was lost to redistribution, Sir Gordon Chalk contested the seat of Lockyer successfully. James Alexander Charles Kenny (6 December 1898 – 24 July 1954) was a plumber and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Kenny was born in Cairns, Queensland, the son of James Kenny Snr. and his wife Rosena Cathleen (née Bollard). He was educated at Cairns State School and served in the First Australian Imperial Force in 1917–1918 and was wounded in France in 1918. After World War I he was engaged in mixed businesses at Peeramon, Malanda, and Mareeba. After state politics he was the prices officer in Cairns and for his last six years conducted the business of plumber. Cook is an electoral district in Queensland, Australia. Cook covers the vast Cape York Peninsula north of Cairns, including the resort town of Port Douglas and the Torres Strait Islands. It is named after British navigator James Cook, who charted the coast and landed on Possession Island – one of the Torres Strait islands – in 1770. Paul Hilton (Queensland Politician)
Paul Jerome Remigius Hilton (1 October 1899 – 18 August 1965) was an Australian politician, and a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1935 until 1963 representing the seat of Carnarvon, and a minister in both the Hanlon and Gair Ministries. Biography Hilton was born to Richard Hilton, a school teacher, and his wife Agnes (née Quirke). He was educated at the state school in Allora and in 1915 got a job as a pay clerk for Queensland Railways, moving to Toowoomba and ultimately Stanthorpe by 1921. He served as an NCO in the militia but was rejected for overseas service for World War I. In 1922, he married Esther Mary Clifford in the town of Gatton; they were to have two sons and two daughters. He became involved with many public bodies in Stanthorpe at this time. Edward Costello (Queensland Politician)
Edward Costello (7 February 1883 – 27 June 1967) was an Australian soldier and grazier. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early days Costello was born in Thane's Creek near Warwick, Queensland, to parents James Costello, and his wife Elizabeth Mary (née Ham). The Costello family took up mining grazing leases at Thanes Creek in 1881. Costello was educated at Thane State School. He followed in his father's footsteps in becoming a grazier. Military service Soon after the outbreak of World War I he joined the military and was the commanding officer of the 25th Battalion in the Australian Military Forces and a major of the 11th Light Horse Regiment. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for bravery during the Battle of Semakh, on the Sea of Galilee on the 25 September 1918. Bill Power (Queensland Politician)
William Joseph Power (3 January 1893 – 29 May 1974) was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly and an Alderman in the Brisbane City Council. Early years Power was born in Brisbane, Queensland to Richard and Margaret Power (née Young) in 1893. He did his schooling in Petrie Terrace and worked as a tramwayman. Power became a leading trade union official before deciding to enter state politics. State political career Representing the Labor Party, Power won the new seat of Baroona in Labor's landslide win in the Queensland state election of 1935, convincingly defeating J.E. Electoral District Of Baroona
Baroona was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1935 to 1977. It mostly covered the inner western suburbs of Brisbane. It was mostly a safe seat for the Labor Party, but was won by the Liberal Party in the 1974 election. It was abolished in the redistribution before the 1977 election, and its territory divided between the districts of Brisbane Central, Ithaca and Ashgrove. An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. There are numerous reasons why someone may stand for office as an independent. Some politicians have political views that do not align with the platforms of any political party, and therefore choose not to affiliate with them. Some independent politicians may be associated with a party, perhaps as former members of it, or else have views that align with it, but choose not to stand in its name, or are unable to do so because the party in question has selected another candidate.
