Conn Smythe
Constantine Falkland Cary Smythe, MC (; February 1, 1895 – November 18, 1980) was a Canadian businessman, soldier and sportsman in ice hockey and horse racing. He is best known as the principal owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1927 to 1961 and as the builder of Maple Leaf Gardens. As owner of the Leafs during numerous championship years, his name appears on the Stanley Cup eight times: 1932, 1942, 1945, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1951 and 1962. Smythe is also known for having served in both World Wars, organizing his own artillery battery in the Second World War. The horses of Smythe's racing stable won the Queen's Plate three times among 145 stakes race wins during his lifetime. Smythe started and ran a sand and gravel business. Toronto Maple Leafs Seasons
The Toronto Maple Leafs are a professional ice hockey team based in Toronto, Ontario. They are members of the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL) and are known as one of the Original Six teams of the league. Founded in 1917, the club had no nickname in their first season, and were known as the Toronto Arenas for their second season. From the 1919–20 season they were known as the Toronto St. Patricks, until in February 1927 when the club was purchased by Conn Smythe. Smythe changed the name of the club to the Maple Leafs and they have been known by that name ever since. Over their 104 seasons, the Leafs have won 3000 regular season games, lost over 2800 regular season games, accumulated six division championships, led the league in points six times, appeared in the playoffs 71 times, gained eight O'Brien Cup championships, and won 13 Stanley Cup titles. The 1932–33 NHL season was the 16th season of the National Hockey League (NHL). Nine teams each played 48 games. The New York Rangers beat the Toronto Maple Leafs three games to one for the Stanley Cup. League business After sitting out for a season due to financial difficulties, the Ottawa Senators rejoined the NHL. The Philadelphia Quakers never rejoined the NHL after sitting out the 1931–32 season. Detroit Falcons were renamed as the Detroit Red Wings. Although the Montreal Maroons had Flat Walsh, Dave Kerr and Normie Smith for goal, they were interested in acquiring Chuck Gardiner of Chicago. James Strachan offered $10,000 plus one of his goalkeepers, but there was no deal. Billy Coutu, expelled from the NHL in 1927, was reinstated to the NHL, but never returned. Harold Darragh
Harold Edward "Howl" Darragh (September 13, 1902 – April 28, 1993) was a Canadian ice hockey right winger who played eight seasons in the National Hockey League for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Quakers, Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs between 1925 and 1933. He was born in Ottawa, Ontario. He won his only Stanley Cup in 1932 with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Harold was a younger brother of the NHL player Jack Darragh. He was the last surviving former player of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is buried at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa. Bill Thoms
William David Thoms (March 5, 1910 – December 26, 1964) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played 548 games in the National Hockey League for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Black Hawks and Boston Bruins between 1932 and 1945. Thoms tied Charlie Conacher for the NHL goal-scoring lead in 1935–36; however, Conacher is recognized as the goal-scoring champion due to Conacher's playing fewer games. New York Americans
The New York Americans, colloquially known as the Amerks, were a professional ice hockey team based in New York City from 1925 to 1942. They were the third expansion team in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL) and the second to play in the United States. The team never won the Stanley Cup, but reached the semifinals twice. While it was the first team in New York City, it was eclipsed by the second, the New York Rangers, which arrived in 1926 under the ownership of the Amerks' landlord, Madison Square Garden. The team operated as the Brooklyn Americans during the 1941–42 season before suspending operations in 1942 due to World War II and long-standing financial difficulties. The 1932–33 Ottawa Senators season was the team's 15th season in the NHL and 47th season of play overall. After a one-year hiatus, as the Senators had suspended operations for the 1931–32 NHL season, the team rejoined the NHL, and announced former Senators star player Cy Denneny as head coach of the club. Regular season Players on loan to other clubs were returned to the Senators, including Syd Howe and captain Frank Finnigan. Former Boston Bruins star player Cooney Weiland joined the team and led the Senators in goals (16) and points (27), while Howe would chip in with 12 goals and 24 points. The Ottawa Senators were an ice hockey team based in Ottawa, which existed from 1883 to 1954.
