1931 Upper Hunter State By-election
The 1931 Upper Hunter state by-election was held on 13 June 1931 for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Upper Hunter because of the death of William Cameron (). The Country Party did not nominate an official candidate because the seat had been held by the Nationalist Party. Malcolm Brown was nominated as an independent country candidate, and was supported in his campaign by the leader of the Country Party, Michael Bruxner. Dates Results William Cameron () died. Malcom Brown won the seat on Labor preferences, and joined the Country Party once he entered Parliament. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. The Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly, New South Wales's lower chamber of Parliament. The current Speaker is Jonathan O'Dea, who was elected on 7 May 2019. Traditionally a partisan office, filled by the governing party of the time, O'Dea replaced the previous Liberal Speaker Shelley Hancock, following the 2019 state election. Role The Speaker presides over the House's debates, determining which members may speak. The Speaker is also responsible for maintaining order during debate, and may punish members who break the rules of the House. Western Champion
The ''Western Champion'' was a weekly English language newspaper published in Parkes, New South Wales, Australia. History The town of Parkes had been served with many newspapers. The ''Western Champion'' began in 1893 and was published by M. J. Little. The editor in the late 1890s was Gordon Tidy. After 33 years as the proprietor, William Giles also acquired the ''Parkes Post'' by September 1932. Working from their separate offices, the ''Champion'' would publish on a Friday, and the ''Post'' on the Tuesday. It ceased in 1934 and merged with the ''Champion Post'' to form the ''Parkes Post''. The paper consisted mainly of advertising and news columns once a month. Today the newspaper operates as the ''Parkes Champion-Post''. Sir Alister Maxwell McMullin, (14 July 1900 – 7 August 1984) was an Australian politician who served as a Australian Senate, Senator for New South Wales from 1951 to 1971, representing the Liberal Party of Australia, Liberal Party. He was President of the Senate (Australia), President of the Senate for a record term of almost 18 years, from 1953 to 1971. Upper Hunter is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. The seat is currently held by Dave Layzell for the National Party after he was elected at a by-election to replace Michael Johnsen. Upper Hunter covers the entirety of Dungog Shire, Muswellbrook Shire, Upper Hunter Shire, Liverpool Plains Shire (excluding the area around Werris Creek), the northern half of Singleton Shire (including Singleton itself), northeastern Mid-Western Regional Council (including Bylong) and part of Mid-Coast Council. History In 1859, Upper Hunter replaced the Electoral district of Phillip, Brisbane and Bligh, established in the first Parliament in 1856. It had two members from 1880 to 1894. Michael Bruxner
Lieutenant Colonel Sir Michael Frederick Bruxner (25 March 1882 – 28 March 1970) was an Australian politician and soldier, serving for many years as leader of the Country Party (and its predecessors) in New South Wales. Born in the north of the state, Bruxner was educated at The Armidale School and started studies at University of Sydney but later dropped out to take up employment as a grazier and station agent in Tenterfield. After serving in the Citizen Military Forces from 1911, Bruxner enlisted into the Australian Light Horse upon the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. Serving with distinction in Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and awarded the Distinguished Service Order. Returning to Australia in 1919, Bruxner sold his business and joined the Progressive Party, being elected to the Parliament of New South Wales for Northern Tablelands at the 1920 election.
